To whom it may concern,

As you have probably figured, I am not the best player on WarLight. But that doesnt mean I havent tried. I've joined clans and gotten tutors, which has helped, but I feel like I must be totally submersed into a competative Comunity to take my play skill to the next level.

"I have a friend of mine who teaches in Illuminati, who believes that the key to learning to play better lies in being the underdog in most of his games; playing better opponents forces him to make fewer mistakes, because better players will punish those mistakes. . . so now he is joining a clan where he is the underdog"

This is what I am requesting:
A fairly top notch clan that is willing to take me. This clan must also have a good reputation. I would join the clan in the form of a ladder ready, publicly known alt.

Tutors are great and clans are great but they haven't been enough. Whats happening in Illuminat is working and I want that effect on myself.

If their are any clans willing to take me in please mail me.

If you have questions feel free to ask them here.

Note: 1.) I will keep "The Turtle" in the Icelandic Turtles clan.
2.) I will stay completly active within your clan and represent it well.
3.) I will not compete in any competition that my main account is also competing in due to alt rules!!

You are welcome to join Illuminati if you believe it to be a 'fairly top notch clan'.

I thought for a while about putting it into the clan forums. But right now that is clogged up with forum trolls. Also there are non-clan players that are quite good that may give me feedback.

You can't be the best if you're being 'tutored.' It looks like you need to get some self-respect before you even think about working on your game. Don't submit to anyone - don't join clans that treat you like a pupil.

But their comes a point in time when the student surpasses the teacher. Im not saying I will be the best but If I play and lose to people that are better than me ALOT then I will get better.

Dairiy. Consider it this way. People that don't play on the 1v1 ladder are usually awful at strat 1v1. When they join the 1v1 ladder for the first time, they get annihilated in many games. But over time, they learn how to not lose and get better -- the process is gradual, but players learn over time what will work against players who are better than themselves. That is what Turtle is getting at.

Play tons of ladder games and analyze them. ask your opponent why he did so when you don't understand it. and ask him what he thinks you could've done better. the best way to improve on warlight is playing.

What helped me the most was when I was hosting WGL and constantly listened to Szeweningen drone on about strategy, eventually I started identifying people's styles and watching ladder games a lot. Then I became a good enough player that I could start sparring with some of the pros, so I just invited them to games and talked and had fun. Widzisz and piggy were my favorite sparring partners, but unfortunately they're both gone atm. ;(

Widzisz is planning on coming back someday..... From what he told me but I never knew him that well.

MoD I do at lots of ladder games and analyze them... Just not as many as you :P

There are plenty of top players that are willing to play a random game if you ask them. I've done that in the past and it really helps. Good luck turtle!

I agree with everything said in the past six posts. The mentality that you have to accept where you are now, and wish to better your skills, is definitely a start. Now, where to go from there? You could do either of the following:

  • Definitely ask opponents why they think you lost. You can still learn from your victories, but like the old cliche, you learn more by losing than by winning. With that in mind, when you lose a game, ask opponents of their thoughts. Ask them what they would have done, and more importantly, why they would have done it.
  • Ladder settings will help slightly. If you want to get better, I say practice playing effectively on all maps, templates, settings, etc. Players who can analyze a map for the first time, and still pick reasonably well, are much more skillful in my opinion than someone who specializes only on one setting. Sure, you can get good at one or two specific templates, but it's not going to guarantee you get better that much. Ladders will prove to other people of your skill, but they don't measure it that well. Anyone with the motivation can get good at Strategic 1v1 and get First if they really tried, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're good. Therefore, try all types of games, it'll build a better sense of analysis and strategical thinking.
  • Get a tutor. Tutors are helpful, because they'll be able to play you and accurately tell you your strengths and weaknesses. Even if it's just a player that you play with every once in a while, who you trust to give good criticism and sound advice, you'll learn a lot from them.
  • Play practice games with higher skilled opponents. Make games with high pre-requisites. It will ensure that you get good opponents to practice with. Teaching will only get you so far; you need to practice yourself and put your learned knowledge to good use to get better.

A lot of this has been said already. There's not really much I can add that has already been mentioned. I know that when WGL was around, it helped to criticize game-play effectively, and I was able to learn a lot from other perspectives. But, you can still find alternatives. And if WGL ever comes back on, then you should do just that. Play the tournaments, and listen to the stream to games that you might have won or lost. Listen to games between "top tier" players. Check out high-ranked players' games on the ladders (if you're trying to achieve ladder recognition) or ask them personally to give you insight on their playing style.

^ (Did you see that? I'm actually paying attention to aesthetically pleasing forum posts!)

Now, on the subject of clans. They can help you a lot, if you know which ones are capable and willing to teach you. You don't really have to be in a clan to learn effectively, but the community that clans bring certainly will help. I know there are some clans that will help you grow as a competitive and skilled player, it just comes down to whether they accept you or not. I would invite you into [V.I.W], but we're not terribly competitive or anything. Not sure if that's what you're seeking, but I'm sure if you wanted to, we could accommodate you into our clan for some time. Either way, I hope you find what you're looking for.

Best of Luck,

-AWESOMEGUY

How long does this take because I'm still new to the 1v1 ladder and I am basically getting pummelled every game...

i was starting to think i was figuring it all out playing on the 1v1 ladder (to an extent anyway), then i joined the seasonal ladder and got my ass handed to me. essentially the same settings, just a different map, and that was enough to give me a little realism. i think my problem (and maybe many others' problem) is that i figured out the right way to pick on the ME map, i figured out the right way to expand, and all the naturally good defensive territories. but it was almost specifically for that map and with those settings, so if something is changed it's like starting at square one. i need a broader understanding of WHY those picks are good, why it is smart to expand a certain way, etc.

what i'm saying is, i could use a little tutoring if anyone is interested.

Can we have more than one 1v1 template?

I have learned how to pick on medium earth, not how to play

@thomas, alias, shyb

are you playing autogames? In my opinion you should be able to improve faster by playing those than playing against the opponents you're getting matched with on the 1v1 ladder

Can we have more than one 1v1 template?

Play rt ladder, seasonal ladder or find some players who'll play other templates with you.

what i'm saying is, i could use a little tutoring if anyone is interested.

Invite me to a multiday strat 1v1 game.

I have played with you a fair amount Turtle, and I like you. But, one drawback you have there is that you won't compete for whatever clan you join. That is a potential drawback to some clans. Feel free to invite me to a game (a well known template) and I can help you some more if I can.

I am sitting on RT ladder now if you want :)

Play a lot games, play the best to be the best, losing is the best way of learning. If you don't have time or commitment then it's not for you. Something I lacked was commitment to get to the best.
