I was curious to see how points for a given game were calculated and I didn't see a reference to it in the forum so I started messing around with my recent games and I think I figured it out.

Rule 1:
You always get 1000 points for beating a level 1 player.
Rule 2:
You always get 5000 points for beating a player at your level.

Based on these rules, the points for beating a player at an intermediate level is a simple ratio.

[(OL-1)/(YL-1)]*4000+1000
OL = opponent level
YL = your level

Example, you are level 21 facing a level 11. You win, you earn 3000 points since [(11-1)/(21-1)]*4000+1000 = (10/20)*4000+1000 = 3000

Level 27 against level 7? 1923 points (6/26)*4000+1000

This formula only works for victories over lower ranked players.

For higher ranked players, you get 5000 points plus 500 points for every level they are higher than you up to an additional 5000 points.
Level 5 beats level 12? 8500 points.
Level 5 beats level 6? 5500 points.
Level 5 beats level 47? 10000 points.

No, none of that is correct. There is a ballon full of pieces of paper with numbers written on them. When the game ends the balloon pops and a monkey picks up one of the pieces of paper.

Ah, but you are mistaken Hauptmann. The formula can not apply to a level one player as it is reserved for games against those with a lower level. Unless of course you can find a level 0 player.

No, the real issue comes when a level 1 player faces a fellow level 1 player and the two rules contradict one another. In such a scenario, it would appear that rule 2 takes precedence and the game is worth 5000 points.

These formulas are correct for any players 10 and over.

However, if the winner is 9 or below, the points are actually calculated differently. Consider a level 2 player. If this formula was used, you'd get 5x the points for defeating a level 2 player over a level 1 player, which would be too extreme a difference.
