Chess enthusiast have probably heard already, but the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen has decided not to defend his title of world champion.

Carlsen has reigned supreme for the past decade and after his last win in the world championship against Nepomniatichi, he claimed to not defend his title unless Alireza Firouzja won the candidates: the tournament deciding who gets to challenge the world champion.

Most people thought this was a bluff, including most people playing the big candidates tournament. However, Magnus has doubled down and has forfeited his title.

What do you think of Carlsen's decision?

maybe they can change the format to make it more frequent and accomodate for more players....but carlsen's decision was pretty selfish also

It indeed shows a truly selfish character.

Carlsen’s decision is not selfish lol. Any loyalty he should have is to the game… not to FIDE. He still loves chess, he’s still playing chess, he’s still producing unbelievably high quality chess games for fans of the game.

He would rather participate in 20 tournaments in a variety of styles than 1 tournament in a particular style. Isn’t that what being a Chess Champion and ambassador should be about?

I agree with graemes. Not defending the title shows little more than the problems FIDE already had. He's still playing chess and will probably continue to do so

hopefully this will make chess variants more popular

but afaik FIDE was seeking magnus's view on what changes he needed.....he himself pointed out nothing in specific, but somehow FIDE has to come up with some magical format that will suit magnus

they already have different world championships for all different formats, and magnus participates and many times wins those also
so its not like its FIDE's fault that he does not want to play classical format anymore

he'll still probably participate in FIDE's world rapid and blitz championships

need double chess, crazy house, and chess 960 tournaments

From the comments I don't know who's at fault but the man must've had his reasons. And even if it's selfishness is a kind of selfishnes any player should have the right to.

What are the probs with the Fide?

I couldn't find any major issues with FIDE

they communicate with top 10 players every 6 months with regards to feedback on changing rules and regulations of various tournaments

last time they suggested 2 classical games a day, but the idea was rejected by most top players.......magnus had no positive or negative reaction to it

their last meeting with magnus concluded with magnus providing no suggestions as to what changes should be made for him to participate again, and they provided magnus with some changes which apparently wasn't enough to motivate him to play world championship again

Carlsen wont stop playing classic chess.
He wants to improve his score there.

He just dont want to play another boring world championship match he knows he will win anyway.

Taking a new record in classic games is something he know he likely wont do so its more of a challenge
