2021 Tour Finals Update

Well, the 2021 AWP season is drawing to a close, with only one remaining tournament, and the top 16 competitors are nearly confirmed, so let's have a closer look at the year, and who has made the cut!

First thing to note is that everyone in the top 16 has won at least one tournament this year - indeed the top 18 have all won minimum 1 tournament, and 20 of the top 22 fit that trend!

There is only one place to start - tornado. What an incredible year, with no fewer than 11 (!!!) tournament victories across the year, including 2x Masters 1000 series, giving him a commanding lead at the top of the standings. I believe there are only 6 other people who have won 10+ tournaments since Ekstone started the series in 2016, so to achieve that in one year is incredible! He's also in the semis of the last remaining tournament, so could stretch that record further!

Second place on the list was taken by malakkan, proving that ONE! really are the ones to beat currently! It was another very impressive year, with no fewer than 5 tournament victories, including a Grand Slam and Masters 1000 event, but even without those points, he'd still be in the top 5, so a very impressive year!

The Gunslinger managed to match the prestigious tournament victories, with a Grand Slam and Masters 1000 event his two tournament victories for the season.

The other two Grand Slam events were won by FiveStarGeneral and criba86; with the qualification mark around 1800 points this year, the 1500 points for winning a Grand Slam event are a great help to making the top 16, and both of their qualification bids were helped by their big wins.

The remaining Masters 1000 series were taken down by Dom365 in 4th place and Hergul (x2) in 5th place, with both breaking the 3,000 point barrier for the season!

Octane built his qualification campaign on the smaller series, taking down 3 tournament victories on his way to 6th spot, whilst Timinator, Min34 and schwarz all took down two tournaments each to secure their spots. GuestNWHSzY is the highest ranked player not mentioned yet, currently holding the last seeded spot (more on that later!), whilst Wini, Master Bjarke, koso and ADHDnl all matched consistency to their respective tournament victories to book their spots!



As I mentioned previously, there is still one on-going tournament at the minute - the last Masters 1000 Series of the year, being played on Strategic Greece. FiveStarGeneral is the big winner here; his run to the semi-finals (as a minimum) has pushed him from the outside into the top 16, and could land him a seeded spot with another tournament victory! Wini is also aiming for a seeding spot; he started the tournament just inside the top 16, but has secured his place rather than relying on others to fall short! GuestNWHSzY is also still involved in the tournament, so interestingly, the current 8th, 9th and 10th placed players are all battling for the last seeding spot(s)!

I will be messaging all the aforementioned players soon to see if they intend to take part in the 2021 Tour Finals, and move onto the reserve list if required! Once the final tournament finishes, we can finalise seedings and get the prestigious event started!

Strategic Greece update - FiveStarGeneral has qualified for the final. Not only has he used this tournament to qualify in the top 16, but he's also secured a seeding spot with his performance! There is one last seeding spot available; it is currently held by Timinator, who is hoping that Pavluski will win both his QF & SF ties to advance to the final, which would see Timi hold on to that 8th spot. If either Wini OR GuestNWHSzY reach the final, they will claim the final seeding spot for themselves.

In other news, we will need at least one reserve player this year, so let's take a quick look at the top alternatives.

Ursus took down a 500 series tournament and reached the semis of a Grand Slam, with more than half of his points coming from those two events alone. rakleader tied together a consistent season, with 4 250 series tournament finals, including 2 victories. Jo Jo was the highest ranked player without a tournament victory, but he did reach the final of a Masters 1000 event, whilst kwihade won a 250 series and had 2 deep runs (1x QF, 1x SF) in Masters 1000 events!

Ursus is unfortunately no longer active, so he will probably not be able to participate

Pavluski defeats Wini in the quarter-final, which means the final seeding spot will either be Guest (if he beats Pavluski in the semi-final) or Timi (if he does not).

And Pavluski's great run continues, taking down Guest in the semi-final. With that result, Timi takes the final seeding spot for the season.
