So maybe you have heard, Dr Typesomething took his own life in late March.

He had a PhD in science from UC-Berkeley. He had a fiancee. He had a lot of friends. His entire life was ahead of him. Yet, apparently the stresses of his profession got the best of him.

If you yourself have stresses in your own life, there are many things you can do. There is no need to end your life. Seek help. Talk to friends or family. Change your lifestyle. Find a new job that you would enjoy. Move to a place you think would make you feel better. Take a trip. Find a new lover. Go to a church/mosque/synagogue/temple to meet people. Get involved in your community. Pick up a sport or hobby. Whatever it takes.

We are human beings, and the 'being' part is a sine qua non.

I had read that post of his once before- thank you for the re-post. I found it very profound and well said, upon both readings. I will say a prayer on his behalf today.....

Yeah he described a lot of things that make WL so appealing for a lot of us in that post. I didn't know him; didn't even play many games with him but still this is somber. Gui said all there is to say about taking one's own life.
RIP Typesomething.

:( It's very sad...that a young man who just finished his studies didn't have the force and the opportunity to do great things in life, to realize his dreams...i don't know what to say, i wished he have spoken with someone beofre doing that, maybe someone could have helped him... RIP

I still find this difficult to believe. I don't know where this information was ultimately derived from, but ... it's hard to imagine this being the central explanation.

That's a shame. Sounds like he was doing a hell of a lot more with his life than I currently am, lol. Wish I could have got one more one vs one with him. I actually wish that in regards to a lot of players that have vanished over the last couple years. I vaguely remember him winning that membership tourney, if only because of how few games played he had at the time.

Very Sad Indeed. My condolences.

To mirror what Gui said,
No matter how bad things seem, always stick to the fight when you're hardest hit, because it's when things seem worst that you cannot quit. Often things are better than they seem, our minds seem to blow a lot of issues out of proportion. Take a break, talk to someone, anyone. Human beings a social animals, you can take a load of pressure off of your shoulders by talking to someone, even a stranger. You may find other's have also experienced what you are experiencing, and a different perspective can give you a world of help.
Find something/someone worth living for, your life can impact in positive ways for so many people. I can guarantee in life there will be lows and highs, life always tries to balance these. Find a passion, it is so worth living in the end, since as far as we know, we only live once. Although situations may resist you, you can always change life, it just requires you to build up enough inner strength to do so, something given time, any human being is capable of.
Also, don't care too much, what will be, will be; life is to savour and enjoy the ride while it lasts.

Something with particular resonance Gui said, that is worth repeating:
"We are human beings, and the 'being' part is a sine qua non."

So, um, Dr Typesomething was my best friend. We've been friends since we were little kids. We're 30 now.

He was the first winner of a Free Membership Tournament. Despite having only a couple dozen games under his belt, he went undefeated, beating HHH twice, once in the semi-finals and again in the finals. He went on to hit #2 on the 1v1 ladder and #3 on the 2v2 ladder.

Warlight was a huge source of joy for him. He loved this game. He went on and on about how brilliantly crafted it is. Every time we got together we talked about Warlight, much to the annoyance of our other friends. He was the reason I continued to play the game. I bought a membership simply to be his partner in the 2v2 ladder.

I realize that when you hear about something like this you want to know why. But there's no rational explanation. I'm not going to share any more details here than what Gui/Qi has relayed. It was related to stress at work.

We as a society place an overabundance of importance on our careers and our achievements. When you don't meet your own lofty standards, it's easy to fall apart. Place your self-worth within you. The fact that you are living is enough. The hard part is already over: you're alive! Go do with your life what you wish. No life is wasted unless you choose not to live it. If you love watching TV, go watch TV. If you love using a computer, go use one. Doing what you want is not a waste. It's not pointless. Life IS the point. You're already alive. Just live.

Dr Typesomething said that he knew his friends would've forgiven him but he couldn't forgive himself. Forgive yourself. Fail, suck, screw up, flail, falter, fuck everything up.

Failing is living. Go fail.

Some issues that are personally important to me are being brought up, and it's really difficult to comment on them, as they are not easy for people to confront. I'm trying really, really hard to get around that.

To so much as seriously consider suicide is enough to qualify you for a clinical disorder. I know he identified this reason for his suicide, but that doesn't necessarily make it the reason. Psychology is quite probably a pseudo-science so I'm not going to say anything more, but by any diagnostic book, the actual cause of suicide would be considered to be one's mental state.

So I would refrain from writing off such qualities as self-discipline, and the desire to improve yourself and/or society. I would certainly like to sit around and watch TV every day, but to quote James Brown, if you don't work, you can't eat. (Mind Power 2:14.)

Competition drives us to 1. get laid and 2. stay alive, which is The Point, according to both you and your genes. And if it doesn't do 1 & 2, then you have Too Much (or Too Little) Competitivity, and I'm sure the psychiatrists and pharmaceutical industry have worked together to come up with a better name for it than that.

If you need me to put this in the form of a platitude, then my point is: if you are suicidal, talk to a psychiatrist (or if you don't know one, a doctor). That's the lesson here.

Apologies in advance.
