I love the city
And it is more financially beneficial to me living here

The issue is what always happens with anything that becomes a trend
Too many people joining something and changing the culture from what it was before

The Hippies did it, and now the Techies are doing it

Escape
This is what's missing in modern society. We lack a frontier to escape to, a tempting gamble with the promise of outsize rewards and utopia.

Sufficiently scalable space colonization is going to be out of reach for centuries, so climate engineering (e.g., technology that lets us make more of Canada, Russia, Antarctica, Australia, etc. habitable) and technology that undermines state powers (i.e., to make those newly habitable territories hard for existing states to control and impose their laws on) can really offer a lot this century.

Alternatively, we should invest in neutron bomb (nukes with less radiation) technology and wipe out a low-GDP economic region every 5-10 years to establish new frontiers in, with minimal governmental structure but (weak) UNSC-backed first-generation human rights guarantees. Could start with Haiti/Dominica, Afghanistan, or Burundi.

btw like the bombing of low GDP economic regions idea. super capitalism and will be like sports of the future.

Canada, Russia, and Antarctica will have more arable land but that process will be slow enough that it won't open a big frontier at once and will easily be manageable/controllable by existing state powers. We need something faster.

@Cacao re:techies

Techies aren't woke, though. Look at their participation rates for protests and unions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_worker_organization#Unions - 225 out of 160k).

Silicon Valley workers and "elites" aren't in the driver's seat. If they were, we'd have radically different policies better aligned with globalized neoliberalism. Instead, techies flock blue to pick the lesser evil more aligned with their interests. The upper and upper middle classes haven't been in control of US politics for a long, long time. Instead, they've sometimes been making alliances with the more social politics of the lower classes (e.g., business conservatives working with evangelical voters) and more often just picking the weaker poison among the chaotic identitarian politics offered by the poors.

Cost of living in California is insane. In order for us to be unaffected financially, we'd have to make $80k more in Sacramento, $267k more in San Francisco, $147k more in Los Angeles, and $136k more in San Diego. You cannot possibly tell me this is reasonable. Utilities are 10% to 37% more than St. Louis. Housing also costs 98% to 408% more than St. Louis. As for the major cities of Texas, we'd have to make $10k to $51k more than we do now. Utilities are 9% less to 13% more, and housing is 15% to 67% more than St. Louis.

Creating a neutron bomb would encourage nations to wage war. Changing the climate to make Antarctica, Siberia, and Canada more livable would submerge every coastal city in the world. Destroying an area to create new space for our people to settle and civilize is an idea brought forth by the Soviets and Nazis in the past. Wielding power over nations to take land for ourselves is perhaps the easiest way to start a world war against us. Where did all this come from? That post I just read did not seem like it came from the same person.

Where are you getting those cost-of-living numbers? For you to need to make $267k more pre-tax to live in SF to get the same savings rate (quality-of-life-adjusted), you must have some serious spending in Missouri. But if you're concerned about college costs, I doubt you're making that much.

Either way, with your set of concerns, I would recommend against moving to SF or the Bay Area. I don't think every place needs to work for everyone. Don't live here if it doesn't make financial sense for you.

Creating a neutron bomb would encourage nations to wage war.
A great power war would remain unthinkable in a unipolar world, and the logic of MAD would still apply for great power wars. Improvements in offensive military capability unmatched by defensive advancements reduces the risk of war if you buy the logic of MAD.

Changing the climate to make Antarctica, Siberia, and Canada more livable would submerge every coastal city in the world.
We could adjust local climate without having to change the global climate. Moreover, earthworks projects can prevent submerging cities.

Destroying an area to create new space for our people to settle and civilize is an idea brought forth by the Soviets and Nazis in the past.
And by Mirabeau B. Lamar, and plenty of American leaders. Heck, the Nazis got the Lebensraum idea from the success of manifest destiny.

Wielding power over nations to take land for ourselves is perhaps the easiest way to start a world war against us.
No, this would not be done by the US. The entire idea of Project Nuke Haiti is to create a frontier for humanity, not America specifically.

Where did all this come from? That post I just read did not seem like it came from the same person.
When did I say human life is inherently valuable? I didn't say liberal democracy is philosophically correct; I just said it works.

First of all dumbass, the Nazis and Soviets are based. Second of all we want Florida and Britain to sink back into the ocean because they are disgusting. If a few others have to go with them it is worth it. War is needed for society to work. What else are you going to do dig up a giant hole and fill it in again?

btw copying manifest destiny doesn't make sense because it needs a certain set of factors to be successful. don't forget most of the land settled sucks and just a little is good.

I finally found a specific sight I'd been looking for. $71,631 is the annual living salary for St. Louis County. $100,749 is the living salary for Los Angeles County. $90,305 is the living salary for Sacramento County. $76,484 is the living salary for Modoc County. $73,495 is the living salary for Dallas County. $73,998 is the living salary for Austin city. Modoc County is the cheapest county in California I could find, and Dallas County is the most expensive county in Texas I could find. $128,127 is the living salary of San Francisco County. Just wanted to include it. So yes, theoretically, we could afford California.

Oh, is that https://livingwage.mit.edu? Or https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/?

Either way, this goes back to a point from a few pages ago:
It's not really apples-to-apples: e.g., in different places you might or might not need to buy a car or have different options for shelter with different cost and return profiles.

Don't take the cost-of-living stuff at face value because financial options are very personal. You won't have the same options or habits in CA & TX. I did this math for my own situation a few months ago when evaluating an Austin job offer vs. one in SF and I'm convinced you can't answer the cost-of-living question without knowing a fair bit of specifics about whose costs you're computing.

E.g., for transportation, I can't just factor in the cost of car ownership + gas because my transportation patterns will be very different in Austin vs. SF. In SF, there's reliable public transit, the place is bikeable, and parking is wildly expensive ($500/mo for parking near your office is a pretty good). In Austin, you can't live without a car. You have to factor in different sets of costs, because you'll have a different lifestyle in each place.

Also remember that the living wage assumes little to no savings. You should not live in a way where you can't save and invest a considerable portion of your income.

You'll basically have to do this math for your own personal financial situation. The calculators are at best rules of thumb.

I want to move to Germany because it's better. I like travelling, and Europe's a great place to do that, and Germany is in the center. Germany has better government, better education, and, in my opinion, better quality of life. It also has nicer people, with a no nonsense society. There are issues, but far fewer than US, France, and Italy. It's not as expensive as Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, or Scandinavia. It has better systems and economy than Czech Republic and Poland. It's more stable than Belgium. Austria would be my second pick. If I could afford it, Switzerland would be my third pick.

Yes, it is full of evilness here. I have sacrifized two virgins this morning, then this evening had a drink with a nice sucubbus. My roommate also tortures children, the sound is kinda annoying, at least when i try to study.
