I got an idea for a more robust chicken: you get the points for word length when you finish a (Scrabble-valid) word. That way you don't need anyone to start a word.

E.g., here's how it could play out:
Loxiiv - N
me - I
Demos - G
Rick - H
-> Rick gets 5pts for NIGH, next letter starts a new word. So you can either be bold and continue the word or try to end it now for all the points.
