I'd say on standard settings Warlight is 60% Poker, 35% Chess and 5% Snakes and Ladders! Where did I get those numbers? I plucked from the clouds in the sky.

from the point of view of the influence of skill i'd say definitely chess, since someone good can beat a noob 100%, in poker it's probably 80-90% short term, while in warlight it's closer to 95%+

i don't know poker enough to say much, but i think a chess VS go comparison could be interesting as well, since it's very clearly a mix of both strategies: gaining territory and defeating enemy's material armies

I think it's more like Poker. Poker players get laid a lot, just like Warlighters, unlike Chess Players.

Well, to me is more chess, I still find the player much more in control of the game, and luck plays big part, but not nearly as big as poker.

Choosing your bonus is like choosing what cards you want to play, and you dont have this chance in poker.
If played correctly and with a proper low-risk strategy, luck can influence the game to the end right way (but only like 5 to 10% of the time), but the rest of time luck will decide only the results of a few armies.

I dont care for playing first or playing last, because all this 50% chance situations needs to be taken into account when planning, so you cant complain about loosing first order for example, because your plan had 50% chance of failing.

Show me a game where luck completely turns a winning game around that i will make warlight into more like a poker game.
But the majority of the comebacks happens through awesome predictions of players to spot minor chances, and the luck in the end means knowing what your opponent will do, meaning it is skill.

To me like 85% chess (or any other non-luck-dice-card game) and 15% poker (or any other luck-card-dice game).

Also, playing first or last is like having the advantage of being white, and have the same piece.
In the game of Go, they can even grade this advantage, with what they call Komi, that is points delivered to the player that plays last, because of playing last.
Since warlight have first movers and late movers every turn, it evens out pretty quickly, to the point that you should realize how to play both possible scenarios.

75% luck and auto distribution is absolutely closer to Poker than Chess. 0% luck (straight round) and manual distribution puts it a lot closer to Chess.

To make this a more informative post, here are the Warlight characteristics that I think are similar to Poker:

1. Reading opponents and predicting moves (much more similar to Poker than Chess)
2. No perfect knowledge of starting locations for yourself or your opponent(s)
3. Bluffing/Tricks
4. Hidden strategies (fog)

There are more, but I think that covers the major ones.

Similarly with Chess:

1. Better players can win nearly every time
2. Bad players almost never win championships
3. Both players can know their opponent's positions and the game outcome can still change
4. Each match is independent of previous matches outcomes (starting positions are not influenced by stack size, for instance)

Obviously different settings can influence any of these factors, like playing with different levels of luck or fog. Warlight will never quite reach Poker or Chess, but can add or remove influences from either game. That's why I personally find Warlight to be vastly superior to either of those games. Also, Warlight adds things like diplomacy which do not really exist in Chess or Poker, not to mention team games, FFA, and so on.

This, and in the long run luck plays an insignificant role in poker.

Early game is closer to chess, but mid and late game is closer to poker.

You guys seem to miss the key characteristic here. Information.

Warlight is at all similar to chess only with no fog, 0% luck, straight round. Chess is a compleat information game. Any game that gives you less then all required information is not like chess.

Warlight is never similar to poker. You don't have stakes. Can't play poker without stakes. Poker is largely based on psychology. Luck is irrelevant. Game theory is only important as far as it allows you to know wheter your hand is good or bad. Psychology is the key aspect.
WL would be like poker with heavy fog, random distribution settings. It would have to have some kind of stakes though. Can't bluff without stakes.

As I said earlier, in most cases Warlight is like bridge. It is a deduced information game.

Artham, aren't the stakes bonuses, territories and stacks?

It always rings false for me when people describe chess as complete information. A player does not necessarily know the lines his opponent is strong in, or has prepared, or has a surprise weapon or whether theyre sleepy today, so games with a lot of calculations will lead to an easier victory.

Sounds like I should learn to play bridge. To the old folks home!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_information - as for information and chess

Bonuses, territories and stacks aren't stakes. They don't matter after the game is ended. Stakes need to give a motivation to surrender. You have no such motivation in warlight (other then wasteing time).

Shows what I know about poker. So if you play poker and dont use real money you have to use different strategies to win? That doesn't sounds right...

Chess is a compleat information game

Chess is closer to wl in terms of tha games (not the play), bc when you in poker allways play for yourself you can in wl and chess play on teams (even or uneven)play ffa and play 1v1.
