Mulva, thank you for proving my point.

See everyone? Even Mulva thinks I'm right in that stoppage time is arbitrary. Your logic (any person is subject to being a genetically inferior people) is patently offensive to about 99% of the world. The remaining 1% are Nazi sympathizers.

If the basis to extend stoppage time derives from the offensive and illogical musings of a simpleton, then its time to introduce a separate stoppage clock that is visible to everyone sooner than 1 minute before the end of the half after it is arbitrarily calculated.

the 90 minutes is also arbitrary, silly billy

srsly though it isn't really arbitrary. it's somewhat arbitrary because it depends on the whim of the 4th official, and i guess the referee if there's compound stoppage time, or if he lets an attack play out.

you cant say okay, there will be 5 minutes of extra time and as soon as the time is up the whistle will blow, and that's because like timinator said, there is no clock pauses like there are in basketball. (and there never will be you stupid yank.) so if you had that, you would probably get players rolling around feigning injury just to run out the clock when they were ahead. boring.

tl;dr football is not an exact science and if somebody scores outside stoppage time that's okay because it's just a fun silly game

it's also a beautiful moment when you're team are losing or drawing but in the ascendancy, and the indicator goes up and there's 5 or 6 minutes of extra time like a gift from heaven, that's enough time. or when you're under pressure and a 3 goes up. yeah we can hold on.

the media here use the phrase "fergie time" which refers to manchester united supposedly being given more added time when they were behind, and less when they were ahead, because of the influence of the (now ex-)manager sir alex ferguson. so a late united equaliser would be said to have been scored in neither normal nor injury time, but the mythical "fergie time".

Of course it is. Just about any decision a referee has to make in football is arbitrary to an extend. That's the way this game has been played for one and a half centuries. I'm not saying that's how it should be, but if you want time-stoppage, what about video evidence, time-outs and 2x veto rights per team per half against referee decisions? Somewhere along the way, the game will change.

The USA played a great match yesterday. They fought like hell and turned it around and then they were exhausted. Portugal had the advantage of an early goal for an hour, meaning they didn't have to wear themselves down as much. So the team that 'did more for the game' - the one that 'should have won' - had to concede a last-minute equalizer in the end. Happens all the time actually. Great show nonetheless. That's football.

Oh and I just can't wait for that totally nerve-wrecking 0-0 next monday.

It doesn't seem hard to me to make it known. Why not just stop the clock (the official blows a whistle when he wants it to stop)? What harm is there in that? Or, have a device in his pocket that he presses a button when play is "stopped" and then again when it "starts"? This way the real time is actually displayed. If you want a running clock, fine. If you want it arbitrary (no replays, etc), that is fine too. But shouldn't we be able to actually display the time left (whatever it is)? Why does it have to be secret?

Like balls and strikes in baseball. Sure, it is arbitrary and up to the ump. But it isn't like we don't display the count and the hitter doesn't find out what was a ball or strike until he's called out.

Also, I should note that I am by no means disputing the outcome (whether there was or was not enough time for that play). I'm just saying there is no reason to not have transparency.

Gnull, what do you mean about next Monday? Don't you mean Thursday? It will be pretty nerve wracking to have Germany/USA and Portugal/Ghana going at the same time. Though Germany is in a great position, wouldn't be nervous for them. They are basically in no matter what (unless there are huge blowouts).

Yeah, Thursday. For some reason I thought it was on monday. And my guess is it won't be nerve wracking at all. The game will be 80 minutes of "just don't concede a goal" and "I hope I don't get hurt or shown another yellow card". Both teams have little to win and potentially a lot to lose. A draw is a-ok for both.

Gnullbeg from what I know of Germany is that no matter the standings they are going to give it their all and will certainly not strife to get only a draw. Portugal and Ghana can still both go through if they win that other match, but only if USA concedes multiple goals vs Germany.

I don't see this ghana or this Portugal winning by a large margin

Edit: Thanks for the heads up Brisk

Suarez got a 7 match ban for Otman Bakkal when he was at Ajax.
He got a 10 match ban for biting Branislav Ivanović whilst playing for Liverpool.
Now, he's bitten someone for the 3rd time. The world record for the longest ban ever is 23 matches, the ban for this bite needs to break the record by a big margin.

I think an international ban (UEFA and FIFA) competition minimally is in order.

If Liverpool had any guts they should also sack him (You don't want to be known as the "You never bite alone" team)

he didn't get elbowed, he was feigning injury so that the referee would see it as an accidental collision and not punish him. that's why he is a despicable creep, instead of a lovable psychopath like roy keane or balotelli.

Also, I think he deserves to be banned from football. His fake acting was just despicable, and it's a 3rd time offence, those short bans clearly had no affect on him, and he continued to be an animal in the game.

And also, stoppage time is determined by the number of substitutions, fouls, injuries, etc. Throw ins and goal kicks are not considered in determining this time. However, it is the referee's discretion as whether or not to extend the stoppage time by a bit due to further time wasted during stoppage time. (This is usually agreed by the ref and his linesmen, and the AR)

And everyone that said that the US doesn't deserve to play 'soccer' is wrong. Despite the stupidity of changing the name to suit their own needs, they do play the rather well, and shouldn't be discriminated again. However, it is really really stupid to call football soccer, and then name your Federation, the "United States Soccer Federation." This coming for someone who works under that name.
