And whose fault is it that a slightly skilled QB (definitely not the greatest) that takes idiotic unsupported positions in obnoxious ways isn't liked by anyone?

none of the assumptions your question is based on are accurate so the question itself is meaningless.

I don't know why we assume that Colin knows even one thing about public policy. He is just a football player.

I dont know why we assumed that MLK knew even one thing about public policy. He was just a priest.

Now, I'm not saying that the issues are equal, or that Kaepernick is even half the man MLK was, I'm only pointing out that this specific comment is irrelevant.

Sorry for the long post, but apparently making accurate claims in a forum post isn't sufficient unless you fully support them with source material.

Pre-Kneeling Knews Knarticles:

Colin Kaepernick Isn't the Answer at Quarterback for 49ers, so What Is?
Colin Kaepernick isn't a franchise quarterback. He's barely a starting-caliber quarterback at this point in his career, and the San Francisco 49ers should adjust their future plans accordingly.

What happened to Colin Kaepernick?
Remember that $126 million contract Colin Kaepernick signed that had $61 million in “guaranteed” money and seemed like a great deal for the 49ers youngster when it was signed? Then remember how it turned out all those numbers were garbage and San Francisco had basically signed Kaepernick for a series of one-year deals? Well, that contract might turn out to be as prophetic for the Niners as it is disastrous for Kaepernick. Here’s why:... (Article goes on to explain factually why Kap was so bad)

4. Kaepernick is 33rd in QB rating, third from last among qualified signal callers. Andrew Luck is last though, so maybe there’s hope?
--- Apparently there's something to a QB rating and isn't actually cherry-picked, at least among sports journalists, and directly contrary to the OP's assertion.

Colin Kaepernick Used To Be Russell Wilson, Bro
Matthews must have consulted Pro-Football-Reference.com before kickoff: These days, Kaepernick is no Wilson. Over this season and last, Wilson ranks ninth among qualified1 quarterbacks in ESPN’s Total QBR metric, while Kaepernick is 19th. The gap that emerged in 2014 has only widened through the first quarter of the 2015 campaign. After his poor performance versus Green Bay, Kaepernick ranks 26th (out of 32 qualifiers) in QBR this season, a startling placement for a QB once predicted to rival Wilson for years.

Colin Kaepernick is still struggling and it is going to cost him $100 million

That Kaepernick struggled is not a surprise. Throwing for 600 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions against the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens, two of the five worst pass defenses in the NFL, is a lot easier than doing it against the Seahawks' Legion of Boom secondary. More importantly, for Kaepernick and the 49ers, struggling has become the norm, and it is going to cost him millions.

Above presents a sampling of Google News articles if you limit news from Jan 1, 2015 to Aug 1, 2016. Kaepernick started kneeling during pre-season games in Aug 2016.

Why did he say he's kneeling?
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder." - http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000691077/article/colin-kaepernick-explains-why-he-sat-during-national-anthem

So, the crux of his stated reason for kneeling is that blacks are murdered by police more so than whites.

But, according to the alt-right Washington Post:
"While many of the year-to-year patterns remain consistent, the number of unarmed black males killed in 2017 declined from two years ago. Last year, police killed 19, a figure tracking closely with the 17 killed in 2016. In 2015, police shot and killed 36 unarmed black males."
-https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/nationwide-police-shot-and-killed-nearly-1000-people-in-2017/2018/01/04/4eed5f34-e4e9-11e7-ab50-621fe0588340_story.html?utm_term=.a3a3bc8b9265

Seemingly, if Kaepernick really cared about unarmed blacks being murdered by police, he should have said something in 2015, when nearly 2x the number of unarmed blacks were killed by police. However, methinks that he was having a good career and getting plenty of playing time during 2015. It would be a shame if 'something happened' to that shiny new career he had, you know what I mean?

Maybe if the Washington Post wasn't so extreme Alt-right, they would actually give credence to correcting for the number of police encounters within each racial group, and also correct for the precentage of violent crime committed by each group. They tenderly step around the issue here: But it is true that a disproportionate amount of murders and other violent crimes are committed by black Americans. Because detailed FBI data on crime can lag by several years, the most-cited statistics on this point refer to 2009 data. According to that data, out of all violent crimes in which someone was charged, black Americans were charged with 62 percent of robberies, 57 percent of murders and 45 percent of assaults in the country’s 75 biggest counties — despite the fact that black Americans made up just 15 percent of the population in those places. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/07/11/arent-more-white-people-than-black-people-killed-by-police-yes-but-no/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.af639fbcb17a

The WP goes on to attempt to discredit this line of reasoning, but truly anyone with common sense should be able to determine that areas with population groups that commit 3x the crime as other groups will have more police encounters, the more of which will end up in a fatality.

And if quoting the alt-right WP wasn't enough to make the OP's head explode, here is an extreme alt-alt-right-alt-right-right-alt-far right article that completely debunks everything that Kaepernick claims he is kneeling for.

The FBI released its official crime tally for 2016 today, and the data flies in the face of the rhetoric that professional athletes rehearsed in revived Black Lives Matter protests over the weekend. Nearly 900 additional blacks were killed in 2016 compared with 2015, bringing the black homicide-victim total to 7,881. Those 7,881 “black bodies,” in the parlance of Ta-Nehisi Coates, are 1,305 more than the number of white victims (which in this case includes most Hispanics) for the same period, though blacks are only 13 percent of the nation’s population. The increase in black homicide deaths last year comes on top of a previous 900-victim increase between 2014 and 2015.

Who is killing these black victims? Not whites, and not the police, but other blacks. In 2016, the police fatally shot 233 blacks, the vast majority armed and dangerous, according to the Washington Post. The Post categorized only 16 black male victims of police shootings as “unarmed.” That classification masks assaults against officers and violent resistance to arrest. Contrary to the Black Lives Matter narrative, the police have much more to fear from black males than black males have to fear from the police. In 2015, a police officer was 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male was to be killed by a police officer. Black males have made up 42 percent of all cop-killers over the last decade, though they are only 6 percent of the population. That 18.5 ratio undoubtedly worsened in 2016, in light of the 53 percent increase in gun murders of officers—committed vastly and disproportionately by black males. Among all homicide suspects whose race was known, white killers of blacks numbered only 243.

Also, why isn't he in the NFL in the first place?
Because he opted out of the 49ers contract himself. His contract was supposed to keep him at the 49ers until 2020, 2 more years from now.
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/18796373/colin-kaepernick-san-francisco-49ers-opts-contract

TLDR:
If Kaepernick gave a damn about anyone but himself, he would have said something in 2015 when blacks were being killed at 2x the rate in 2017. However, his career was going well then and it would have been a sacrifice for him.
If Kaepernick gave a damn about black lives, he'd squarely take on the root cause of violence within the black communities, rather than scapegoating 'police violence' and a racist oppressive country (all the while idolizing Che).
If Kaepernick cared about playing football, he would have stuck it out under contract on the 49ers.

So, I've since proven that by the time Kaepernick started kneeling, he was already washed up. Stating that there are 100's of QBs in the league does not alleviate that Kaepernick was a bottom-performing starting quarterback.

And as so many people already pointed out, taking a multi-million dollar contract so a corporation with horrible worker's rights violations attempts to make money - all the while claiming you are fighting oppression, is the epitome of irony.

And Wally will be left wondering why the racists on the right don't believe everything he says.

He's a half black half white NFL football player who knelt down on his knee during the national anthem instead of standing straight with his hand on his heart. He did it to protest racism when #blacklivesmatter was just starting to get it's legs, if you know what that is.

We shouldn’t and he doesn’t. In the beginning he did lots of interviews and stuff and he sounded like some idealistic college freshman who didn’t know what the hell they were talking about or how the world works.

He evidently is aware of this and has basically stopped speaking publicly. I wish LeBron (and others) would follow his lead.

Bring attention to important issues? Great. Please do it. But you are a fucking athlete, not a philosopher or political scientist. Don’t try to pretend you are something you are not. Instead they should be handing that megaphone to people who are truly qualified or shining a light on them.

Kap is doing this. LeBron wants to be that guy himself.

That’s accurate. It’s very different from what you originally said but if that’s all you meant, it’s true.

Hard to fault the dude for doing it when he did. Say you’re Carson Wentz and want to do the same thing. Do you do it now and risk getting blackballed? Or make a few hundred million first?

I’d make the money first, too.

I believe our religious leaders should talk politics. Conservatives believe that priests are actually much more qualified to talk politics than football players or most other people.

I find that it is often those who lean left saying that priests should keep politics away from the pulpit while conveniently ignoring that MLK was a priest.
