Well, we could also start with using the decimal time system, i.e. 100 seconds per minute, 100 minutes per hour, 10 hours per day, 10 days per "decadi", three decadi's per month, 12 months per year. And the year starts at 22 September.

@Richard, we use the decimal in Ireland and AFAIK, the UK uses it too. Also we changed our speed limits from imperial to metric in 2005 and there wasn't really much fuss about it.

Ace, at least you people are normal with your numbers!

Were all markings done in miles or km before the change (Dublin - 200km/miles north)? Just curious.

I love that the Irish (and I believe English) held firm on what truly matters.... the pint is eternal.

i was under the impression that countries were reluctant to change from imperial to metric because of the expense of changing all the road signs.

also, i knew about commas being used as decimal points in some countries, and because of that we write 12 000 instead of 12,000. i never knew the same countries used a point instead of a comma in that case. confusing.

Richard, what do you mean "you people?" lol jk ;)

Yeah, everything was miles. A lot of people still use miles when giving directions etc. though, including me, so not just the older generations.

And yes, the pint *is* eternal. I was surprised to see Ireland drop to 15th in the world rankings of drunkest nation - what is the world coming to?!

Oh, and my previous post should have said, "decimal point."

It's okay Ace... in the same year two 'studies' were released listing America's drunkest major cities. One had my hometown listed as dead last, the other had it listed as first. Go try and figure that one out.

Now I forget... Ireland uses the 'Imperial pint' that is 20 oz instead of the standard 16 oz, right?

Yeah we use the Imperial pint, or as I like to call it, a *Real* pint.
You might give absolutely monster portions for pretty much every food/drink in comparison to us, but you don't use real pints.

Tsk tsk America, I thought you were better(or worse?) than this.

Most bars offer 'real' pints as well as the smaller ones.

As for the portion sizes, I'll let you know in 3 weeks time. Touchdown in Dublin (VERY) early on the 15th.

best part of the superbowl is the commercials.. since companies spend millions of dollars to make them..

What is there really to explain? It's the championship game of America's most popular sport. Its the American version of the World Cup Finals match.

I liked this year's superbowl. And I did pay a lot more attention to the actual game than to the half-time show (which really wasn't that impressive). The German commentators sucked terribly though. And no american commercials. Oh well.
Handegg rules are simple by the way. The only one thing I will never understand is the amount of breaks in this game. It doesn't feel like watching one single match but like watching a lot of small matches after one another.

Gnull... the breaks are solely for the TV stations. The networks pay $2B US per year for broadcast rights (~7M per game). The crazy thing is that a study showed that of the typical 180 minute broadcast, only 11 minutes are actually of action.

I understand why Europeans don't really get into the Superbowl, but it's our most popular sport. Just as I understand why ya'll don't like American football, I will say I am not a huge fan of football (soccer). Not saying it's bad, I just can't really get into a sport where a) I have no home team to cheer for, and b) a "good" match can be a nil-nil or 1-1 draw. Come on, what kind of sport doesn't have a winner for every game!

even baseball, with it's 3 hour games and 97 seconds of action.. ends in a winner each and every time..

even if it draws out so long they have to finish it the next day..

Hockey. Or at least it did before they caved to the ignorant masses and instituted a skills competition to decide games.
