There has been talk since World War 2 to implement US + Mexico + Canada into an EU style Union. Bush talked about it, Clinton talked about it. Trump hates that idea, and the wall is the symbolic destruction of that, the MSM doesn't want it, the Establishment doesn't want it, they hate Trump. The dude is not a racist, and if he is, then so are you and so is everyone else. Saying the Mexican government is sending its worst is NOT racist.

Anti-poverty measures hindered the decline of poverty in America. For a while, poverty was declining one point per year until LBJ enacted his anti-poverty programs, at which point poverty declined started to decline at a slower rate. Anyway, if you're getting money from the government and you can sustain yourself that way, there's no reason to get a job. I've seen this first hand with relatives on welfare and it made them dependent on the government because it became their primary source of income.

It depends on how much money and in what shape you get it. You could argue gaol is a shape of welfare, but most folk do not want to go to gaol, even though they can "sustain" themselves very easily.
