I think there is a difference between Patriotism and Nationalism. Patriotism being fine and Nationalism being acceptable if there is a great threat to your country

I think he was being sarcastic.
Pride in your country isn't a bad thing. In fact it should be encouraged because it unifies a group of people, this is especially true when you live in pluralistic and multicultural societies like America.
However, an overwhelming nationalistic belief that your country is superior is foolhardy by historical accounts and at the least disrespectful to other nations.

You can't unless you brainwash people, remove all borders from the world, and convince people to give up their culture, heritage, ancestry, religion, ethnicity, and sense of belonging with people common to them.
Stop trying to get rid of Patriotism. Just try to minimize its negative effects (i.e. war and imperialism).
