Damn, considering the number of players and how many points we earned. These rankings show how a few of us play way too much :P

I'd love to see average ladder ratings or something like that too.

Yeah - Average 1v1 ladder ratings would be nice to see. Brilliant work by the way.

I want average rating across all ladders (perhaps not RT as that is a separate rating system).

The issue would be if there is a very small sample size (like 1 'team' on the ladder for a clan). So it would be good to see both the average and the count of teams.

A combination of Average Points in Last 30 Days and Total Points in Last 30 Days would be great for the official list. [Total Points in Last 30 Days * verage Points in Last 30 Days]

^ So the same as average points in last 30 days ** 2 * # of members. Seems a bit contrived, but I think it would work. Going by just average points in last 30 days would only contribute to the problem of clans not expanding to the whole userbase by creating an incentive for them to not add new members if they want to maintain quality.

I think sticking with total in past 30 days would be best (of the ones above), however. Yes, it puts DARKLORDS on top, but adding a new member to a clan should never count against it- even in something as trivial as the rankings.

MAJOR CAVEAT: This data only takes into account ladder statistics that have been made public on a player's user page (I didn't query ladder teams directly because I'd already written my code with player pages in mind). Take these totals, percentages, and averages with a pinch of salt- especially for smaller clans where one player can make a big difference.

I think the current system is adequate. Not just that DARKLORDS are at the top, but it clearly shows how active a clan is.

No need to crunch any numbers.

As with ladders, why should that have any influence on the clan rankings? Some clans specialise in certain setups such as diplomacy and may not participate in the ladder, so should they be at the bottom? No.

As for Average points, it could lead to weak players (or someone on holiday) being booted from a clan due to the managements lust for top spot.
Wrong.

Clans are meant to add an extra dimension to the social spirit and community as a whole.
Lesser players sometimes enter a clan to gain expert guidance in the art of war.

Any change to the system would severely place these freedoms, and desires, in jeopardy.

darklordio, this is why he is presenting different rankings. each clan is different so certain lists will matter more to them. it would be impossible to come up with a be all end all list since the measure of success is subjective.

shyb, I'll get around to using current rankings after this round. Now I'm doing all players that have ever participated on the 1v1 ladder (including currently unranked ones), that last one as a %, average rating based on participating players only, and all-time peak rating.

Totally understand and i find the lists very interesting. I do however grow tired of the hatred of my clan, seeing as we keep ourselves to ourselves and help develop new Darklords to be quality Warlight players. I am trying to do good for the masses. Its tough at the top.

Hmm, I actually see your point. Right now there's two types of clans:

- Elite clans, like apex/WG/etc. that don't recruit and just invite already-good/great players.

- Big clans, like Illuminati/CORP/etc., that do recruit (even if they have restrictions) and invite developing players (and usually help them develop in some way)

The first clans can't be faulted- they work toward a different goal entirely- but the second group isn't really that great at helping the WL community develop- usually they don't get enough members to really help the community in any way, fail to scale well (low-activity clans being good examples of that), or just have a bunch of players and fail to provide any benefits for most of them. From my perspective, these clans completely fail to leverage their potential as communities that could work toward collaborative growth and really change the landscape of Warlight. I think a big reason for that is that we've only got 132 clans that have been active in the past 30 days (154 total), and that's because most people aren't going to spend $15 to make a clan. This means that we don't really see much disruption- lots of people have ideas about how to run a clan, but most won't ever get implemented- and competition. The clan system isn't going to be trending toward the optimal community, because there's nothing really forcing it to.

I don't think we can except the # of clans to increase significantly anytime soon (I doubt Fizzer will eliminate a source of revenue until this site's revenue increases by an order of magnitude), so maybe we should be thinking about how to create that sort of disruption/competition with our present small number of clans.

I think the future of clans depends on it- right now, they've got maybe 5% community penetration when instead they could be guiding the growth and development of most Warlight players and ultimately building the game and metagame in a way very few clans (WG, Apex, {rp}, [20], and a few others) have done so far. Right now we're getting pretty bad disruption (DARKLORDS, with its inclusiveness) that doesn't really get refined at all (e.g., in a more competitive environment, we could've seen a clan that copied DARKLORDS' lax recruitment standards but added some mechanisms for player development, growth, and activity)- because clans are just totally welcome to stick around with what they have and stagnate away.

I honestly think that Clans- and communities- are the key to Warlight's future- after all, if you're a bad player, you're probably much more likely to get discouraged and just quit if you don't have any friends on this site or know of any people who'll guide you. There's also not much of a metagame to Warlight, but Clans- through things like AWF's belt system and the elite clans' internal tournaments- build some of their own metagames for players to enjoy.

That's why I support an alternative ranking system (and hopefully other measures as well). I think Clan League has been a big step in this direction, but we need something bigger, something more official, something that works for all clans, and something that's much more dynamic.
