When To And When Not To Pick A FTB: 8/19/2015 09:21:04

Hello again!

I recently completed a game (https://www.warlight.net/MultiPlayer?GameID=9303610) in which I took one of the available two First Turn Bonuses (otherwise known as FTB's for any newbies here) and went on to win in 10 turns. And as it can be seen there is only one obvious counter-pick to that FTB which is in Turkmenistan.

So I wanted to ask a question to all WarLight players out there: When should you pick a FTB, and when shouldn't you? It would help if you insert a game link of you or your opponent picking a FTB, along with your answer.

EDIT: Just noticed SA was also a potential FTB, thanks Cat for pointing that out. With the 0% WR settings FTB's are obviously harder to take as it requires pure luck with 3v2's

Thanks!

it depends on the game ^^
If you can get a FTB and you are next to your Opponent and you can destroy his Bonus fast it´s worth to get but...
if you get a FTP where you cant expand and your Opponent has a better Position he´ll win.
Every map and every game is different, depends on where the Wastelands are and where your Opponent is picking.

you 4th pick doesnt make much sense, if your oponente had 1 of the 3 territories you started with you wuld have to start expanding on your 4th and the one you picked would take you 3 turns to conquer

Going for a FTB is usually the right option. It gives you initial income advantage. If you are fast to expand and reach your opponent in time to break his source of income before he breaks your FTB. If it's not then it's just predictable picks and you should be going for safety instead.

Reasons why you shoulnd't go for a FTB usually include:
- to get it you're putting your picks on wastelanded areas that you won't get later on (making your FTB boost not be worth it in mid game)
- the FTB being next to a territory where your opponent can counter you from if he predicts your FTB and/or finishes his safe income before you can wipe him out from the area.
- there is another FTB on the map with better strategic placing which you will most likely be conceding to your opponent by going for this one.

/\There was another FTB on that map that he passed up (S. Africa) which met all of the above criteria for not picking the FTB.

EDIT: Obviously Buns, but it made a nice example for what he was saying.

@Cat We both know nobody would do that, but reason 2 still applies.

Another reason not to do a FTB is the 2nd bonus is not efficient. Like you might not do it with East/West USA (and CA of course) because it will take you longer to get the USA bonus.

And yes, there is the option of countering it instead, but you need to be sure the counter will deny/break it.

A lot of times there are two FTBs, I find that scenario even more intriguing.

^ I would think that most of the time it is efficient.
