Apparently she is blind and deaf, due probably to having had a stroke and being 89. But seriously, how on earth do you tell her that she just got another book published? And what is the general proceedure for telling people who are both blind and deaf that something happened? I mean you can't learn Braille when you are both blind and deaf...

Edit - I have no clue. Perhaps she was taught braile before she was deaf? I do not know when she became deaf.

she probably learned braile before becoming full blind or full deaf.
there are several degrees of being deaf, most of them you can still hear something and use that something to learn sign language or in this case braile.

there's a herzog film called land of silence and darkness about deaf-blind people, its probably on youtube. i think the main woman who it's about, was spoken to by writing letters on her palm.
but yeah you don't instantly go from being able to see and hear to being blind and deaf, so there would be time to learn ways to communicate before it happened.

I found something that said she's "partially blind" and practically deaf. Maybe she can still get by.

Yeah (and I own the book, our old school library used to put tatty books on a shelf, and anyone could take them. My copy's cover kinda doesn't exist anymore :) )
Also it is actually quite good although I agree with Tyrion about that.
