The alliances of the Great War had thoroughly unraveled in its aftermath, and the European colonial powers were at each other's throats in the African theatre. Because the fighting had not previously spread below the Sahara, Germany, France, and Great Britain retained their southern colonies even in defeat. The victorious Italians and Spanish controlled North Africa and were looking to expand, while the defeated powers were screaming for vengeance. Spain and Italy, once close allies, now saw each other as rivals for dominance. The Italians blamed the Spanish for failing to ensure the neutrality of the Levantine Protectorate in their recent Middle Eastern campaign, while the Spanish coveted Tunisia to complete their control of former French North Africa. The Europeans were not the only ones with ambitions for Africa. Ethiopia had maintained a formidable kingdom in the East, and saw European discord as an opportunity for growth. In Dimension Delta, Portugal and Belgium never became colonial powers; Portugal had merged with Spain during the Reconquista, and France had annexed Belgium in the 19th century. Much of the territory they would have controlled remained independent under local tribal leadership. In the early 20th century, however, a sense of emerging nationalism took root among the Bantu peoples of the Congo basin. This movement, which came to be known as Heart of Africa, aspired to create a powerful nation-state in Central Africa that could rival Ethiopia and contend with European influence. As with Ethiopia, the fractured postwar landscape offered the perfect chance for Heart of Africa to realize its dream. And so began the 7-way conflict French historians would call "la Guerre du Coeur", the War of the Heart. |
