Description

War begets war, and the Black Sea conflict was no different. The Ottoman Republic, thwarted in its initial attempt to rebuild a Middle Eastern empire, landed on a scheme to save face. Italy had taken control of several British Mediterranean possessions after the Great War, adding Egypt and the island of Cyprus to their colonial holdings in Libya. Their forces were spread thin trying to control their expanded territory, and so the Ottomans were able to seize Cyprus in a surprise amphibious assault.

Meanwhile, sectarian tensions were high in the former Ottoman lands. A powerful coalition of Arab states known as the al-Rashidun Emirates (named for the four "rightly-guided" caliphs of the Sunni tradition) had arisen to oppose the Shia-aligned New Caliphate of Ali. While the Caliphate was fending off the Ottomans in the Black Sea region, the Emirates took the opportunity to seize southern Iraq.

The Governor-General of Italian North Africa (Africa Settentrionale Italiana) ordered a counterattack against the Turks, and called on the Caliphate to launch a simultaneous invasion. They were happy to oblige, as long as the Italians would assist them against the Emirates in return. The Caucasian Kingdom joined this alliance of convenience, hoping to end the Ottoman threat to their sovereignty once and for all. On the opposing side, the Emirates recruited the Levantine Protectorate to assist them against the Caliphate. The Protectorate had been established by the Treaty of Madrid as a theoretically-neutral government for the contested Holy Lands, but the Caliphate's obvious designs to annex Lebanon had convinced the ruling council of the Protectorate that it should take allies where it could find them.

And so the war that began in the north spread south, with antagonists new and old continuing the endless struggle for the illusion of security through conquest.
