The victory of the Mediterranean Coalition in the Great War, though decisive, was not absolute. Spain hosted a peace conference in Madrid and wrung concessions from its rival empires. They were able to keep much of their core national territory, but lost imperial holdings and outlying colonies. New nations were formed and old nations re-emerged from the ashes. The bitterness of the defeated, the ambition of the victors, and the hopes of the reborn lay the groundwork for a series of regional clashes to come. The first aftershock took place in the Black Sea theatre, which had been profoundly reshaped by the Treaty of Madrid. Russia lost control of the Caucasus and Ukraine. The Ottoman Empire lost everything except Turkey proper, and restyled itself the Ottoman Republic. The Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved into its component nations. Despite being on the winning side, the Graeco-Balkan League did not emerge unscathed. Romania had suffered at the hands of Russia and felt that its partners had neglected its defense. Accordingly, it formally invoked Article 7 of the League Charter and seceded from the GBL. While relishing their independence, the newly freed nations knew these were dangerous waters to swim alone. It didn't take long for new pacts to coalesce. Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia formed a united military command known as the Free Danube Corps. The peoples of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan put aside their own rivalries to form one Caucasian Kingdom, hoping to deter reconquest. In the former Ottoman lands of Syria, Iraq, and Persia, a rising tide of religious fervor led to the foundation of the New Caliphate of Ali (named for the revered first Shia Imam, Ali ibn Abi Talib). These three entities, together with Ukraine, signed a mutual defense pact that was immediately put to the test. Russia, the Ottomans, and the GBL wanted their lands back, and had secured the help of the unpredictable Brotherhood of Bürkit (the Golden Eagle), ever hungry for new prey. |
