After Italy assisted Spain in wresting control of Morocco from the French, they wasted no time calling in the favor. Long had the Italians coveted Tunisia and its valuable ports. They planned to launch an invasion from their holdings in Libya, and they asked the Spanish to launch a simultaneous attack from Morocco into French Algeria. Outnumbered and at risk of losing all their North African territory, surely the French would quickly capitulate and cede Tunisia as the price of peace. The Spanish had serious doubts about this plan. The Ejército de África had taken heavy casualties in the Moroccan campaign and were trying to regroup in Rabat. While the French Foreign Legion had lost their entire Moroccan corps, rumor had it that reinforcements were arriving by sea in Algiers. The Spanish were still having trouble getting their own reinforcements past the English blockade. Worse, there was the possibility that British troops from Egypt would invade Italian Libya while the Italians were engaged with the French. Italian intelligence assured them that the British would be occupied with an anti-colonial revolt in southern Sudan, but details were sketchy on the strength of their forces. In short, the operation was hastily conceived and fraught with risk. Nevertheless, the opportunity was real, as was the debt Spain owed to Italy. And so the die was cast. |
