Description

In a dimension not quite our own, the years before the Great War saw a series of smaller conflicts that shaped the territories and alliances of that continental conflagration. One such conflict, known in France as "la Catastrophe de Casablanca", pitted France against Spain and Italy in Morocco. Spain and France had been vying for control of the region for years. It was generally thought that the French Foreign Legion (la Légion étrangère) was a superior fighting force to the Spanish Army of Africa (Ejército de África), and France held the core of the country. To improve their odds, Spain enlisted the help of Italy and promised to return the favor in a future operation.

The plan was for Italian marines (Brigata Marina "San Marco") to storm Casablanca in a diversionary attack, while a large Spanish force ferried over from the homeland would push south in a devastating offensive. British intelligence agents in Huelva got wind of the operation at the 11th hour, and the Royal Navy dispatched warships from Gibraltar to block the strait. Thus the Spanish assault force never arrived. The Italians were already in position, however, and launched their amphibious attack before the Spanish could call them off. And so the war began. Both sides would have to make do with their colonial regiments for the bulk of the fighting, with occasional reinforcements from their other holdings in the area (such as the Spanish Canary Islands and French Algeria).

In this scenario, you command the Ejército de África. The French have greater resources to draw on in the region, and the Italians will be unlikely to hold Casablanca for long. You will need to take full advantage of the diversion to shift the balance of power in your favor if you wish to claim all of Morocco for Madrid.
