In a dimension adjacent to our own, The Three Crowns of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden fought as one nation in the Great War. In the 19th century, however, they were still distinct kingdoms. Pan-Scandinavianism, which started as an intellectual movement in the universities, caught the public imagination and spread through the middle and working classes. People began wearing badges on their lapels to signify their support for a union of the crowns; their symbol was a version of the Tre Kronor of Sweden with one crown done up in the colors of each of the kingdoms. The current ruling classes had no interest in sharing their power, and came down hard on the movement. This only led to increased radicalization, and Three Crowners started amassing weapons outside the capitals with an eye toward a coordinated putsch. Finland was at this time claimed by the Russian Tsar and occupied by the notorious Baltic Corps. They had their own revolution brewing, with a mix of Finnish nationalists and Sámi separatists gathering in the northern region of Lappi. The commander of the Baltic Corps had one eye on these partisans, and the other eye on the opportunity for territorial expansion if the whole of Scandinavia fell into civil war. After months of preparation and growing tensions, everything happened at once. Rebels stormed the Russian arsenal in Rovaniemi. Three Crowners sent out the signal and their three battalions took up arms outside Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. The Baltic Corps commander began counterinsurgency measures in the north, while simultaneously attempting an invasion of Sweden (without authorization from the Tsar). The three Scandinavian kingdoms, united in their desire to remain apart, agreed to a temporary military alliance against the internal and external threats. In this scenario, you command the Three Crowns rebellion. Can you forge a new, powerful union from the maelstrom? |
