In a dimension slightly askew from our own, early 20th century Europe was also a powder keg waiting for a match. Instead of two entangled alliances hungry for expansion, however, there were three: the Triple Entente, the Central Powers, and the Mediterranean Coalition. The Spanish and the Italians, emboldened by recent victories against France in colonial skirmishes in North Africa, declined offers to join the two familiar factions. Instead, they forged their own pact, and recruited the newly formed Graeco-Balkan League that coalesced after the Ottomans lost control of the region. Meanwhile, in the north, the Scandinavian kingdoms had united under the Tre Kroner: the Three Crowns of the Norse. Diplomatically isolated and recklessly belligerent, they prepared to go their own way in the coming conflict. As the competing powers began mustering their troops, but before any of them were fully prepared, the spark arrived. In short succession, bombs were detonated at historic monuments in Istanbul, Stockholm, Rome, and Moscow. Nobody knew who was behind the attacks, but the competing powers were quick to blame each other. The Great War was about to begin. In this scenario, you will take control of Spain. Spain and Portugal united during this dimension's version of the Reconquista, and they gained full control of Morocco during the aforementioned North African conflict. You will notice, however, that you are not the only nation to have absorbed smaller neighbors and enlarged itself. Your allies will find themselves beset on multiple sides by stronger foes. Your early advances in aviation have focused on transport, and airlifts are possible if somewhat expensive and challenging. |
