Description

The uprising was crushed under the joint effort of the US and Ydigoras Fuentes, thus consolidating Guatemala as a reactionary bulwark immune to social change. The darkest chapter of Guatemala unveiled, one filled with forced disappearances, massacres and genocide. The irony was that when reform could assuage Guatemala's extreme disparity in the 50s, US capital, along with the local oligarchs smothered such hope and resorted to bloody repression to satisfy their greed. In the cities erupted sporadic mass movements of students and workers, and the state responded with death squads and disappearances even if the protests were nonviolent. It was when those hoping for change realised that the US would not permit ANY progress from within the system that they decided to overthrow the system, resorting to armed resistance and Marxist ideals. The Maya people who suffered severe discrimination and lived in extreme poverty finally awakened after Mayan labourers interacted with the urban population, who inspired them to struggle and preserve their indentity. Grassroot members of the Catholic Church also joined the fight for social justice. The rural and urban support coming from the disenfranchised created a solid base for the guerrillas, propelling the insurgency to new heights. After forcing the people to desperately take up arms in self defence, the Army unleased a bloodbath with US support, killing more than 200,000 people, predominantly unarmed villagers. The state accounted for 93% of all human rights abuses(guerrillas at 3%), yet almost none faced justice. This heinous episode of terror would be "remembered" in the US as a "success against communism", conveniently forgetting that it was the US that created the desperate social conditions in the first place and committed gory crimes.
