Description

The rebels were bashed hard, and the invasion was on the verge of complete defeat when fresh reports came from the front that the Army was completely demoralized and unwilling to fight, as rumors of a possible invasion by US marines from Honduras circulated. Taking into consideration the previous US invasions of Nicaragua and the Philipines, the situation seemed dire for Árbenz. Árbenz gathered his ministers, and after discussion, he resigned and sought political asylum, going into exile. Armas usurped the Presidency, rolled back a decade of progressive reforms, returned all land to the UFCO and elite ladowners, and banned left-wing parties. A series of coups followed, paving way for yet more severe political repression and economic disparity. The vast majority of Guatemalans were landless peasants working in extremely harsh conditions, while the urban workers fared no better, with union leaders and "communist" sympathizers regularly arrested and "disappeared".Then came the autocracy of General Ydigoras Fuentes, who had usurped power in 1958, after the assassination of Armas. Some young junior officers were deeply enraged with the general's corruption, cronyism, incompetence and his infringement of national sovereignity, as he allowed the US to construct secret bases and dispatch unmarked bombers for the Bay of Pigs Invasion, without consulting with the military or sharing the payoff from the US. The daring plotters, in swift action, captured Zacapa and Puerto Barrios, and called for the dictator's downfall. Shocked upon hearing the massive uprising involving some one third of the Army, the dictator kept calling the US ambassador, proclaiming it was Castro who was behind all this mess. The US went along with this explaination anyway, and sent Cuban(exile)-manned aircrafts to strafe the bases, as Marines gathered off the port. Loyalists also came to crush the revolt...
