Description

By 1200 BC, the Phoenicians of Old Tyre had moved onto the island just west of their first settlement. The city they founded there became known as New Tyre - an island principality that was famous throughout the ancient world. Eventually, New Tyre would grow to become a maritime trading center for Phoenician colonies that stretched across the Mediterranean, and the island of Melkart would become famous for the great docks built in the two natural harbors along her eastern coastline.
