It is the twelfth year of the reign of Emperor Heraclius. Following the expansion of the empire to its apogee under Justinian I, our troops are spread thin and control over our outer territories is buckling. Egypt and Syria fell to the Sassanids during continued fighting from 613-615, the Visigoths threaten to take the rest of our holdings in Iberia, the independent city-states surrounding Rome have begun to shirk the authority of Byzantium, and Barbarians threaten from the North. Political and economic instability also assault the empire from the inside, but we do have the advantage of a vast intelligence network reporting on our adversaries' positions. This is a turning point. Can divine grace and imperial fortitude overcome these trying times, leading us toward renewed prosperity, or will Byzantium follow Rome on the path to ruin?
