The carnival (or amusement park) is a component of the psyche and is a symbol of the gratification of one's desires. (Neal Schusterman explores navigating the carnival in the novel Full Tilt.) One is suffocated by an air of excitement as one walks the labyrinth of thrills; prizes to be won, rides to experience. If one is willing to suffer a bored moment, one is rewarded with a fraction of a moment's pleasure. In short time, one begins to feel imprisoned in the labyrinthine-world of dopamine reward conduits as thrills increasingly fail to satisfy and boredom sets in. The carnival turns to horror. The carnival-as-horror: a world, in which the rides themselves adapt to the diminishing reward function. Death and dismemberment become the main attractions. Those for whom boredome is the greatest torture subject themselves to the last and greatest thrills to be experienced. The souls have left the day carnival for boredom, having ridden all the rides. Woe to those who stay for the night carnival. For them, there is no escape.
