i'd certainly go for central basin & nuuk

There are four regions: Russia, Indonesia and the vicinity, Africa, and America.
You want to cover as many as possible, so South America (counter against America and Africa), Indonesia, Central Russia.
As backup picks, I would probably do West Russia, Antarctica, East Africa. Not so sure about it.

That's a good start, but there's more to it than that.

You want to get picks that will get you the most income in 2-3 turns and set you up to expand or attack.

A lot of people learn by experience, so I suggest you find someone who is good at the template and get a few training games with them. This also allows you to learn the specifics of the template, and by playing as many games with different people, you can learn different play styles
