I know you guys have this thing going about making big maps lately, and they're beautiful. I like some of them, but honestly I just don't see how they'll ever be playable outside very odd templates. So I have a request.
I would like for all of you active mapmakers to make at least 1 strategic map (A map designed for 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3 in mind). This doesn't include skunk940, who I don't consider a mapmaker at all. I mean Issander, E, Moros, etc. Chaos has done plenty as it is.
I'm sure Gui, Szeweningen, and many other players would readily help you out in ideas of how to accomplish this. Here are some ideas of regions on the Earth that would make interesting strategic maps if done correctly:
Indonesia + Islands and North Australia.
Caribbean Islands
Scandinavia
Interesting geography in those areas that could lead to naturally good strategic maps.
If you want to do fantasy-styled maps, then that's fine. Just make it so that there are key strategical points, and quite healthy bonuses.
Of these strategic maps, we are mostly lacking good alternatives to Europe for 3v3. It's not that I don't like the map, it's a great one.
That is my challenge to you, take it or leave it ^^
ancient greece and colonies
ancient indian city-states with rivers as natural barriers
mesopotamia
precolumbian north america with mountains and rivers
africa with geographic barriers
germanic and scandinavian tribes with natural barriers
viking invasions: main areas where vikings invaded
great lakes region of us and canada plus additional canadian lakes
triangular trade: colonial america +western europe +west africa
100 years war: british isles france and the low countries
Not surprising, after a minute of glancing at your terrible African map Skunk, I noticed many connection errors. Instead of reporting them to you, I'll just allow you to go find them. It's your responsibility in the first place to make a playable map.
Nice... make demands of mapmakers when you've never bothered to put the time and effort into generating one yourself.
Even better is to criticize and attack someone for their mapmaking skills when you've never even done it to have the first clue of the effort involved.
Richard Sharpe: It's not a demand, a request. One that the map-makers can quite easily decline. If you wish for me to make my own map, I have downloaded Inkscape and was doing some rough drafts. I can guarantee you that anything I put out will be carefully scrutinized, tested, and playable.
I apologize for being hostile, happens when you're frustrated at things that have nothing to do with Warlight. Still grants me no right to be so hostile.
I criticize his maps as a player. They're unplayable on any template I can think of, and I feel it's insulting to the map-makers who try their best like Moros and such.
The purpose of the thread stands though, it's been a trend recently to make really big maps and to see how far we can go with those maps. I never once attack that in this thread, I think it's remarkable. Some of these maps are beautiful and cartographers should be jealous of some of the work our community can put out. However, I requested that they sit back and think of what players want to play. While I know I'll find use for the big maps somehow, I just don't see how the majority of people will find them that useful. I know that strategic maps will be useful for everyone. I know that these map-makers are completely able to create very strategic and great maps. So why not I guess? I'll try to make some of my own, it'll take me a bit longer than them since I'm jumping into this for the first time ^^.
