Inkscape Drawing Large Objects.: 12/24/2020 11:46:19

So, when I am drawing a lot of lines or tracing a very large object, sometimes I misclick and it starts a new line. On a small scale, it wouldn't take long to fix. But when I am drawing a ton of lines, and I accidentally make a new object, I have to retrace like half of the thing which takes like another hour. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

Literally seconds after I posted that, this happened, lol, it's that big of a problem. (But I noticed it immediately, so it wasn't a big deal.)

Hodop, I actually don't know how to prevent it, but i know a perfect way how to notice it faster. When I make lines in Inkscape, I make them red-coloured. So if I accidently start a new line, it will be black and it'll attract my attention. After finishing your line, you can easily change the colour back in FILL AND STROKE menu.

Wow, thanks a lot! I did not even know that was an option. I just normally draw in black anyway. THX!

I'm a make mine green, though. Red is the same as when drawing a line.

I'm not sure I understand. You can just connect the new line to the old line, right?

No, not without making the ends connect. And when I am trying to cut something, the ends cannot connect. Like, a line is not shape.

A shape would subract the area inside the outline, but a line has no outline, so it just cuts it. A shape puts a hole

You're not using Inkscape's terms (object, path, stroke) so that makes it very hard to understand what exactly you're trying to do.

It sounds to me like you're drawing with the bezier or freehand tool, and then accidentally misclick and start a new line? In that case, you can select both the end node of the first line and the start node of the new line (shift+click on both nodes) and then click "join selected nodes".
That makes the two separate lines into one line.

If Roman Empire's suggestion works and is all you needed, great! Don't mind me then.

This used to happen to me all the time, just use the bezier pen instead of the freehand tool

So that's the bezier tool. Ah. I've only ever used it by accident and never could figure out how. Well now I know.

What's the bezier tool?

Like the freehand tool except you don't need to click the previous node to make a new segment. You can just click click click all the nodes of your shape, then click the first node to close it. It saves a lot of time. Also if you click and drag it makes a curve rather than a freehand drawing, but I don't use this feature often. Press b on the keyboard or click the pen icon in the toolbar to use it.

Oh my god, this is so helpful, I've accidentally clicked it before, but I never knew that it did this.

@Joey, if you want to use it again, it's located at the side of the screen, looks like a pen.

Honestly, the bezier tool is basically the only one I ever use.

I love the bezier tool I use it for tracing images. It is insanely powerful if you spend the time to learn it.

The finished product also turns out a lot neater than the free hand.
