No, ignoring USA was not a mistake. USA is usually one of the worst possible places to start.

He's not good either. Turn 2 he played horribly. Deploying 2 in east China was beyond dumb. Not attacking Norway was as well.

Hitting Indonesia instead of East Africa made little sense. Africa was obviously safe, his other two starts much less so.

He attacked East Africa, Indonesia, and Greenland all at the same time the turn after, I can't imagine a stupider possible action.

But when you attack more directions, you can see where your enemy is!

You didn't win because you got all of America, you won because he played like an idiot. Knowing where the opponent is is rather meaningless if you can't actually fight them once you border them. Spreading your armies too thin going in multiple directions is a sure way to lose.

@Namib, small bonuses are better in the beginning than large bonuses. I'll give a quick example, from one of the games I played on the 2v2 ladder:

http://warlight.net/MultiPlayer?GameID=6563442

Notice that Anna took Central America and her opponent took East USA. Anna had Central America at least one turn before East USA could be taken, and she wasted no time in slaughtering him.

One of the first rules of strat. 1v1 strategy is, if a bonus can't be taken in 1-2 turns, it isn't worth looking at.

Edit: I just realized she also had West Africa too. Her opponent used two starting picks to take East USA but by the time he could complete it, she already had a +3 and a +4 bonus, and had invaded Florida.

But look at this, I have the bigger bonuses and i deploy at the borders and when i see he strikes somewhere, I hit him harder elsewhere!

He surrendered afterwards.

Triple picking a US bonus occasionally works well against noobs, but when you begin to play better players it breaks down.
I agree with Good Kid in that your wins aren't because you've made more good moves, but fewer bad moves.

That being said, you are probably improving. Just remember to beat better players you generally want to not triple-pick and to get your first bonus after 2 turns.

If you like you can invite me to a game and I can demonstrate some of these points.

Nice game, but I would suggest that triple-picking the USA might not have been the best strategy. It is utterly foolish to say that any bonus is "bad" or "dumb", because it completely depends on both where the wastelands are and where the other player starts. I think that it was a fairly well-played game for you, but Tim also had much lower luck than you did.

I would also agree that he made a mistake by ignoring North America, especially Mexico, but more than anything that he didn't advance towards North America until you found him.

Also, Between Being and Ego, could you take your turn in the ladder game? XD

The second game Piggy? ie. The taking of Australia with the OD card? Or did you mean turn 6 of the first game?

EDIT: Obviously the second game, first games turn 6 was 'meh'.
