Google translate is *alright* as far as translation software goes. There is some good stuff out there if you want to pay, of course, but if you need free translations for something that's not that important, try the DeepL tool offered by Linguee. It has a character limit but you can just copy and paste in sections for longer text.

AI translations are getting better all the time (especially when we keep training them- if you are multilingual, never, ever help Google's translation AI with suggestions, as a translator I beg you) but they are still a long way off from having the common sense that a human translator has. But as GT seems to go for a more literal, word-for-word translation than a human translator, I think the variation between 3 or 4 languages will likely be smaller, though one bad or awkward translation in the chain tends to ruin the whole chain, which happens a lot when you're going between languages without any common linguistic roots. When I do a translation from English-Spanish or vice versa, I will often change word order and sentence structure to make it sound more natural, depending on context of course. A tourism website requires a bit less rigor than a court judgment, for example, as on a website or similar publication I'm more worried about sounding natural and "smooth" than I am about being precise.

But seeing as AI can't make these kinds of distinctions based on context still, keep supporting local translators if you're looking for good quality work. I will say that I have seen a great deal of laziness on the part of governments and big businesses in this respect, I recently had to rewrite a (very important) 500 page document that you could tell was either written by someone with a very basic level of English or just copied and pasted from GT.
