Update 2.6: 6/27/2014 07:37:14

check the new update.

http://blog.warlight.net/index.php/2014/06/update-2-6-unlockables-page-mega-strategy-pack-and-mega-maps-pack/

it concerned only about some pack (useless, for spend 15$ in maps or unlocks setting (without can play ladder)i guess is still better buy membership for 30$)

So no new feature, again :(

all the change are for the marketing strategy, now if you want change names you have to pay 4$.

very disappointed :(

When i see the update, i thought was about new rule for ladder (the stall thing), maybe introduce a real time ladder for teamgames, and the old clan League thing.

Also, i just read the post of update 2.5.2, when fizzer say "However, the next two are major updates that I’m really excited for. I’ll just say this: major core gameplay changes."

I am a bit afraid to be honest about it, last time he introduce a new game play change was the LD (local deployment) which for many of us has not had a positive impact.

Which are your opinion?

my first reaction is that i don't like it. Even less incentive for new members to buy the membership accounts. Actually being a member now seems more and more useless to me as a player. And overall this update feels like it's moving warlight into the "pay to do anything interesting" direction, these kind of monetization models need to be very well considered not to drive the community away imho and i don't really see Fizzer polling the community about any of this.

I understand the game needs to be monetized to move forward but putting price tags on things that were free for members 1 year ago doesn't feel right. I could see the point in having these things unlockable for new accounts, to give them an incentive to unlock things they care more about instead of going full on to member account.

Also, prices feel too steep. It's much easier to convince a player to buy small upgrades recurringly than to buy a bulk unlock. So there should be more options for what to unlock.

So yeah, i don't like it. I would very much prefer to see updates fixing the reported issues or bringing more value to the game.

Yes the prices are too high. Much better to do a quick 0.99 name change for example, instead of paying $4 to do the simplest thing possible (albeit with no ads too which I think is superfluous). If you are going to monetinise the game, it has to be done smartly.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'd love to spend all of my time working on adding new features, game mechanics, and such. To me, that's the fun part. Working on payments and stuff is boring.

However, WarLight has to make money to survive. It costs over $1000 per month just to keep the servers online, and beyond that if I can't pay my rent I'd have to quit and go get a real job. And if I quit I'll never get to work on the fun stuff. So there has to be a balance.

The strategy pack and maps pack were added as a result of people asking for them. I get contacted by lots of people who want to play a strategic game with their friends, but don't want to spend time leveling up. Obviously, if you've already leveled up, these features won't interest you.

Even less incentive for new members to buy the membership

I don't understand this at all. The packs and membership unlock different things. They actually complement each other.

now if you want change names you have to pay 4$

That's completely incorrect. The payment option is added only for people who want name changes more often than once every 5 levels, which was impossible before.

The whole point here is to strike a balance between sites that never let you change your name (which I always find annoying), and other services that let you change it freely (which is even more annoying, since some people change it every day and you can never keep track of them.)

one time (before Wl 2.0) you could change name evey 20 days. Now, after you reach level 52, for gain 5 levels occur more or less 6 months. Andthis is the point. :)

Yeah i understand the blance between make money and add feature. I hope you will increase your money from Wl now, so you can focus on add new feature =)

Can you give us any hint about the new feature you are working on? More or less like you did with the Wl 2.0 with this post:

What i say is more or less true, though depends on how much time you have:
for level up from level 1 to 53, take more or less 10/14 days.
if you buy membership, you start to play realtime ladder (4xpoints) and 1v1 ladder as well, in 3 days you are level 53. For this, the pack are pretty useless. Buy a membership is still much better than buy packs. But maybe is just my point of view =)

What about make it possible to change name once every month or so, after a certain lvl reached? like lvl 52/53/54/55 or something, where it starts to get harder to lvl up.

FIZZER - one thing that needs fixing - nameless players - a bug that allows people to have no-symbol names makes it impossible to check their profile or report them as long as they are not in a clan.. then again - if there were two same level players in one clan, it would be impossible to determine who wrote what. That's a possible backdoor for forum trolls.

to see what i mean - look at the second post in this thread..

and for the topic - i agree with ps to some extent. Yes. Membership is way to expensive for being only "ad free" in addition to a regular account (i know i know.. open games, vacations, right? but these are irrelevant imho). And the packs are a good idea, but you really should consider selling single perks for little money.. Like $3 for luck unlock, or $5 for ladder entry.. these or even less expensive offers may get you to reasonable income i guess.. As far as I know it's always quantity, not price which makes real money.. my 0.02

I think most people are actually really glad that name changes are no longer so frequent. I am.

You complain there are no big gameplay changes, but when was the last time Fizzer added something that help him run the site?

How Fizzer can claim that:

"I don't understand this at all. The packs and membership unlock different things. They actually complement each other."

is nonsense.

If membership gave more benefits, such as the things you added to the strategy and map packs there'd be more incentive for people to become members. What's not to understand about that?

Luckily 4 of my 5 member accounts are grandfathered and don't need to level up, but on the one account that I did have to level up on to use maps and settings I quickly regretted having bought membership on it, and I can guarantee that I wouldn't buy a membership today if I was a new player, let alone 5 memberships like I purchased in the past.

I bought 50 memberships, one for every two alts to share. And I think it is fine that Fizzer offers players new ways to do what can already be done.

When you woke up today, were you expecting anything new on WL? No? Then what is the problem?

Go play those ladders and autogames like good little boys and all will be forgotten.

No Gui, you have not bought 50 memberships.

Also irrelevant.

It basically boils down to:

Very few new players will join and then buy not only a membership, but a membership and the map/strategy packs before playing the game long enough to unlock most of what these unlock sans leveling.

Those new players that would buy a membership are less likely to do so than if it contained the benefits of the map/strategy packs.

The only players that are low level and have played the game enough to think it's worth $59.97 are alts. The main affect on alts is the same as new players though. Someone might spend $29.99 to get their alt a membership, but they're much less likely to do so if they then need to pay another $29.98 to unlock settings and maps. All this really seems likely to do is discourage the creation of alts, and discourage the people who would purchase more than one membership from doing so.

It isn't likely to increase profits, it's more likely to decrease them as opposed to wrapping these benefits up into the membership package.
