Concerning the possible streamed live 3v3 tournament: 9/27/2012 17:06:47

Over the past streams, the question has been raised at whether or not I would ever host a streamed live 3v3 tournament. After careful consideration, the answer is no.

I cannot provide an entertaining stream for a 3v3 tournament. Here is my reasoning:

1. People. An 8-team tournament would require 24 players. I am unable to get 32 players for a 1v1 streamed live tournament (an even more popular event), so my hopes of getting 24 players interested enough and able to play that same day on the same time.. is very low.

2. Time. 3v3 games last longer than 2v2 or 1v1 games, and rightfully so. They're strategically more difficult and require a lot of planning in both teams. Would it make sense for me to require 10 minutes each turn if there would be a turn that would rightfully need to last longer? Doing the math, some of these games would need to last 1-2 hours if there's no quick decisive winner. If I pressured people to play we MAY get the tournament to end in 5 hours. Would it be entertaining? I don't think it would.

3. Commentators. Currently, the commentators I have are only skilled at 1v1 and 2v2. I would need at least 3-4 experienced 3v3 commentators, and at least one of them would have to stream. Alternatively, I could have some pros teach us the basics and advanced 3v3, but that would take time. I would much rather see already experienced players in control of the stream.

For those 3 reasons, I cannot justify streaming a 3v3 live tournament. Unless I have an overwhelming response from the community that will eliminate problems 1 and 3, I won't budge.

However, I have another idea that would be interesting. This would take away problem 2 completely. I don't mind hosting a live 3v3 tournament. I just won't stream it. I'll probably schedule another event close to it, or overlapping it. Then we will go back through the tournament and analyze some of the games. We'll post those videos on youtube, and perhaps that alternative would satisfy some of you.

I am all for the alternative, and I could do it whenever we have enough people to start such a tournament.

I want to ask anyone reading this these questions:

1. Would you like to see a 3v3 streamed live tournament anyways?
2. Would you participate in such a tournament?
3. Would the alternative after-the-fact analysis be better or worse than having it streamed?
4. Would you participate in the alternative idea?
5. Would you be willing to tutor possible commentators, or be a commentator?

Thank you for your time. :)

I could co-commentate with myhand, because I'll have a better internet connection starting october, although I would like it more if it were on a Sunday if I were to commentate.

I could participate I suppose if I could find two teammates. Main problem is that I am not good enough at warlight to commentate on a 3v3 ( think I have played 50 3v3s or something to that effect)

Good idea, but I think you have backed up the reasoning pretty decently. Perhaps having a 4 team tourny? you could make teams larger, but then longer match times and so on as you mentioned earlier.
In answer to your questions:
1. yes
2. yes
3. worse
4. yes
5. don't have skype, so no, and can't teach as I'm not good enough at advanced 3v3 matches

A 4-team tournament would be rather bland in my opinion, due to the fact that there would only be 2 rounds. 3 rounds is a minimum.

Play a round robin. With 4 teams, 3 rounds of 2 games which is more than enough to entertain people I imagine.

Am I missing something, I can't seem to find 1v1s with commentaries anywhere. Did you not do a 1v1 tournament or did it just not get commentary?

As for the idea of a Round Robin, yet again I feel that time would be an issue. As for Szew and Myhand, thanks for the help. I may be adding you guys to a game to help teach Myth Scrag and I 3v3 as well.
