I'm just curious why you'd want them to exactly match. As a novice map maker myself, just wondering if I am missing a good idea. It would seem to me that this would make things harder to see.

If a border color matches a player's color exactly, the bonus color will become a bit lighter.

He needs the exact colors, as Warlight can tell the difference between say, 0000FF (Blue) and 0001FF, while it'd be really hard for a player to distinguish them. Warlight would brighten the former, but wouldn't brighten the latter.

How about putting up a feature request (read: a UserVoice suggestion) to make it a little less strict and also change bonus colours when they are very close (but not equal) to an army colour?

I don't think a uservoice suggestion is necessary as long as map makers have access to Bakapon's list. I'm going to put the list on the wiki ( http://wiki.warlight.net ) so that it is easier for everyone to find.

I added the clause at the end of the section "Defining Bonuses".
http://wiki.warlight.net/index.php/Entering_map_details#Defining_Bonuses

If a player controls a territory that has the exact same color as the player's color, the territory's outline will appear lighter. This is so the player can easily tell which territories connect. The following is a list of the HTML format for each of the player colors:

  • Blue: 0000FF
  • Purple: 59009D
  • Orange: FF7D00
  • Gray: 606060
  • Hot Pink: FF697A
  • Sea Green: 00FF8C
  • Teal: 009B9D
  • Dark Magenta: AC0059
  • Yellow: FFFF00
  • Ivory: FEFF9B
  • Electric Purple: B70AFF
  • Deep Pink: FF00B1
  • Aqua: 4EFFFF
  • Dark Green: 008000
  • Red: FF0000
  • Green: 00FF05
  • Saddle Brown: 94652e
  • Orange Red: FF4700
  • Light Blue: 23A0FF
  • Orchid: FF87FF
  • Brown: 943E3E
  • Copper Rose: AD7E7E
  • Tan: FFAF56
  • Lime: 8EBE57

Fizzer deleted it. He said: This page is meant to be a tutorial for how to use the map designer. I don't think listing all of the player-controllable colors is relevant here, but perhaps a dedicated page "Player-controllable colors" would be better.

When I made a map, there was a preset list of colours to choose from for the bonuses. It was a while ago now and I can't remember exactly but I presumed they would already be the same shade as the player colours.

I don't recall every player colour being represented but are at least the simple colours (red, blue, green, yellow, orange etc) the same shade as the player colours? And if not, why not?

Perhaps the list could have all 24 player colours by default, in the exact same shade, to ensure the lightening happens?

People could customise them if they want, but the defaults should be the same.

Apologies if this is the case now - as I said, it was a while ago that I made my map. And even then, for stylistic purposes, I only used three bonus colours.

I never used the map designer, so here's three possibilities:

  • The Yellow Team is right, there is a quick select, it has the 24 player colours and nothing else. In that case the list of colours is largely superfluous.
    Nothing has to be done.
  • There is a quick select, but it's missing some colours and/or some of the colours are "wrong" (very close but not identical to a player colour).
My suggestion would be to ask Fizzer to change the presets to the 24 player colours (a UserVoice is probably not even necessary for that??).
  • There are no presets, or they barely correspond to the player colours.
It's probably easiest to make a Wiki page with JAM's list of all the correct value (and I suggest also including the following link: http://blog.warlight.net/index.php/2012/01/warlight-update-1-10/ ) and put a note in the Entering Map Details page which points to the list.

That looks like Fizzer simply used a standard colour picker... That means it's impossible for me to guess how much work it would be to change, but adding 24 additional colours might be possible. If done on the right there's even room for the text "Player colours", potentially hyperlinked to an explanation why you would want to choose exactly those colours.

I did a bit of copy-paste editing in Paint and came up with this, I even misspelled "colours" to better fit in with the rest of the page. ;)

Would this be a correct, complete solution for the issue?

Colors is not misspelled. Color, humor and similar words are American English, colour and humour is British English.

And the ";)" at the end of that line is Internet for "just kidding". :)

But anyway, do you think this would be a good idea? Do you have suggestions to make it even better? (Or do you see a problem with my proposal..., that's also possible of course).

@RvW- your solution would be the simplest. On the left, some colors like the aqua-ish color are very similar to but not the same as the player-color aqua, while some colors like red and blue are the exact same as the player-colors red and blue.

RvW, I think you've done a good job of taking my suggestion and advancing it with an actual example of how it could look. :)

Perhaps the player colours could use slightly bigger squares than other colours, have a more noticeable headline or be in a postion that stands out more, along the top or on the left instead of the right. Anything really to emphasise them a bit more.

I realise it was just the first draft and it won't be you that makes any changes if indeed changes are made, but I think making it more likely that people use them by subconciously attracting their eye to them would be good.

With your draft, it took a second ot two for me to spot them. It might not sound much but I think it should be instant, a psychological tool to make people think they should use them.

Nice work though mate.

@Yellow:
The reason the squares are all the same size is because it's much easier for Fizzer to implement that way. And there's 24 user colours, so in a 12-high grid, this seemed to make the most sense.

A possibility would be to put them on the left (moving the "preview square" and the "enter any colour box" a little over to the right). Instinctively I expect that to be only marginally more work than adding them on the right. Do you think it would make a noticeable difference?

On reflection RvW, it might not make much difference and if the way you designed it is the easiest to implement, it might not be worth the extra trouble to redesign/move things that don't have to be.

I just thought that with most people reading from left to right (shalom my Hebrew friends) that the eyes normally look at the left of something like this first. But really it's splitting hairs and probably only mentioned by myself earlier due to my not finding it straight away.

If it does get changed, I presume there will be something added to the wiki/map making tutorials about it, plus it is being talked about on the forums, it will be mentioned in any report that Fizzer releases with the new updates that he makes and I think that if someone makes a map without using it, it could well get mentioned on their map feedback and they'll know about it for any future maps.

And countless other ways for people to hear about it.

So the knowledge of it should be common enough for it not to matter if it's on the left or the right of the palette.

I'm only one voice here but for me, it seems like it could be alright as it is.

As a side note, you seem to like getting involved in the technical side of this game and website itself more than most and you always seem to add something constructive or useful to these kinds of threads.

Just a non-patronising pat on the back mate, if you'll accept it. Keep up the good work.

I'm a computer science student / programmer-as-a-hobby myself, and WL seems to be very well made, making it interesting to think about how to finetune it even further. To be fair though, I have never seen the code, so when I say "easier to implement", that is an assumption or an educated guess; when Fizzer looks at this thread he might very well think it's just as easy (or easier) to put it on the left.

I'll gladly accept it. :) Just keep in mind, I can't suggest further improvements to ideas without people coming up with good ideas in the first place; keep up your good work as well!

JAM, would you like to do the honours and make a UserVoice suggestion for this?
