American Civil War Map?: 7/4/2012 11:47:01

Hello, new to the forum, but familiar with Warlite and love the game. I have an idea (and saw a post about it from some one else thou it was not real well thought out). I have seen only one American Civil War map and it seems lacking to the idea I have. I envision using the US Big map, or near to it (perhaps not as many counties as in that map). I am afraid that I am not real skilled at building a map, (I have looked at the wiki but for me it leaves something to be desired for those of us that dont know much about map making), and there for am put in the position to ask those that are skilled in map making.

What I am looking for and the idea: The American Civil war has always been a passion of mine and I think it, as any other war, would make for great game play. I like the size and detail of the US Big, but I think that the western half of the US is not needed for this map. The States of Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma (netural) Texas and every thing west would be great. I would rather see areas of major battles and larger cities used (Lord of the Rings Middle Earth map for example).

The States that were firmly in the grasp of the USA and the CSA need not be so divided and the bonses not so great. However the "border States" of Missouri, Kentucky, W. Virginia and Maryland would be much greater divided with larger bonuses for portions of the States, cities, major battle sites, and full States. Both Capitals for USA and CSA should be of major importance as well. This I think would better represent the importance of the Border states in tearms of armies, as in real conflict.

The one American Civil war map I have seen (America 1861) is a good Start to what I am looking for and I like the idea of a Blockade bonus as in that map, and perhaps the "French" support area. This idea is really for a single player map (as I dont really know anything about MP yet) but I think it would also lend itself to MP very well.

I would appricate any feed back, suggestions, or help anyone can offer me in getting this map made. Please post your ideas, thoughts and opinions. Please be gental as I am new here, }: )>

I understand that many here are busy, and really dont expect anyone to make a map for me, and trust me I am working on making a map myself (its always more satisfactory when one does it ones self anyway), but Inkscape is pretty alien to me even after reading the forums, the wiki, and watching the youtube clip (all helpful by the way) but I was looking for suggestions from the pros before I got a map going and learned the hard way that I did something wrong.

I have an image of what I want, and am working on mapping it out, but I have questions. For example, given that I use the Bezier tool to map out territories I see there is a gap between them, as my mouse skills are not great. Will this show on an uploaded map? Will it effect the game, as in reaching one territory to another with a gap in it?

Most importantly is anyone other than myself interested in a map such as this?

I would prefer that I not look like a total noob when making my first map, so is there a way to avoid the gaps between territories, or a simply way to correct them? I know beizer is not the only tool type, but I find it helpful for the laying out of the states, the other tools I will use as I start to divide them up for bonuses.

Thanks for any suggestions or tips you or anyone else can give.

Moonlight, what you should do to not make holes between territories is to trace the entire bonus first. Once you have done that, draw a path that divides the territories, but ends once it reaches past the edge of the original bonus. then select both the entire bonus path, and the dividing path and press ctrl+/ to use the divide tool. Its hard to explain in words, but there has to be tutorials out there. I have to leave right now, so i cant find them for you... but good luck, and fantastic idea. ill be back to help in a bit it you still need it.

Thanks for your help, and yes, I think you will need to clarify that for me a bit, of if you know of a tut when you have time, that would be great. I am giving up for a while and going to a 4th BBQ, but will be back at it later tonight or tomorrow, so please if you have more advice or tips, please please post them. }: )>

Spent 10 minutes trying to figure out what that face was... finally, mind. blown. I'll make a quick tutorial for you if you would like. It'll be just images, but it should convey the message, and I was planning on doing it anyway... check back in a bit, I'll see what I can do with it.

Can you post a link of the map (your warlight one or an image you are starting from)? Hard to give tips without seeing anything.

I intend to do just that, but I have not go the map uploaded to warlite yet as I am still building, but here is a screen shot of it. I have not built in the bonuses yet, this is only the territories so far.

So anyway as I said the idea here is to use the border states as a "clash" area. To try and stress that I have split those middle states into 2 or 3 chunks and added cities or battle sites (the circles). Far left will be a blocked bonus, and the bonuses for the middle states will be worth more than the outer upper and lower states, as well as bonuses for controling cities/battle sites in groups, and for controling the middle states as a whole.

Flaws? Suggestions? Scrap the whole thing and start over?

I like the idea of the blockade areas, but why do they extend so far into the North? Maybe have them cover only the Southern coastline. As they are now, a Southern player could break into the blockade and completely decimate the North. To me, this is not historically accurate. Had the South broken the Northern blockade, it would have protected their coastlines and made it easier to transport troops. It would not have given them easy access to every northern port from Baltimore to Maine.

Had the south broken the blockade it would have done more than just protected the coastline and made it easier to move troops.

It would have allowed them to sell their cotton to the Europeans and in return buy arms, re-invigorating their economy and alleviating the crushing inflation that the loss of the European markets caused in a cotton centric agricultural economy. It may have also led to the Europeans deciding to support the Confederates which arguably some European powers may have liked to do.

^^ This is no comment on the map, just the history.

I had thought of adding a "Europe" territory for each side to attack, but I felt that distracted to much from the original plan. I am not totally satisfied with the blockade as it is right now and will prob alter it before I am done. I let the blocked reach so far north for the very reason that Ska22 said. The South never did brake the blockade but had they done so, they would have had more freedom to move troops and to increase the CSA economy as Ska22 said. But that is digression.

Either way, while I am trying to be as historically accurate as poss, I cant put everything in it. I extended the blockade so far north in lieu of a Europe territory AND to grant the North some ability to strengthen the blockade at will, but I think you are right, and I may draw it back some, or perhaps add a second line of "blockades" to make it tougher to brake through. I may remove the access to the northern states and allow access to a still half developed "Europe" territory idea.

As I said this is not the final map by a long shot and I have some other ideas I may add, any further suggestions are very welcome!
