Recipe to get higher rating than most of the time I had on 1v1 ladder:
1) Beat 2 > 2000 players
2) Beat 2 > 1700 players
3) Beat 11 < 1550 players
4) Stall at least 2 games

Would have been a well-deserved #1 with this run :)

Sze, when in the ladder, I use probabilities to estimate my chances of winning. If the player has a rating of 1300-1600, i estimate my probability of winning at 80%, if the player has a rating of 1600-1800, 70%, if he has 1800-2000, i'd say 50-60%, if he has 2000+, i'd say 33-50%. This leaves room for error. The ladder is so competitive that everyone who's ranked 120th or above knows what they are doing. You can blitz through your first few games with your eyes closed. But once you get to 120th or above, your opponents know what they are doing, they need to make 6 picks, they know about 4v2 luck, they have a basic knowledge of all the cards. Usually, allowing a little bad luck, its that small margin of superior experience and skill that wins you the game. When it comes to top players, not only do you need to make your best picks and play, you also need luck. Which is why your chances of winning are lower. There is no player in the top 100 that I can say with certainty I can beat in our first game.

My point? 15 games in a row is harder than it looks, even with noobs and stalling. Sure, I played a lot of noobs, but you have to be consistent too. I can say with certainty that I cannot beat 15 players ranked 1500-1600 in a row without stalling, and I doubt you can too.

i think that's not completely right. a top 50 Player can easily get a top 3 rank when he stalls a few games. i joined the ladder, beated 15 Players and took rank 3. i needed to stall against 2 Players but with 5 games at a time it's no problem. sure the ladder is very competitive at the Moment, but i had only 3-4 serious fight under my first 15 games.

I agree. While, the competitiveness of the 1v1 ladder has increased, in light of recent events, like Gnuffone cheating and the abusing of the ladder Qi made a thread about a while ago, its certainly losing the entertainment value for long term participants. Earlier today, Piggy and I were just discussing how blatant stalling on the ladder has become, not sure if there's anything that can be done about it though, since stalling is perfectly legal.

best would be if new Players have to beat the FIRST 15 matchups instead random 15 Players to get ranked. like that you can avoid alts from taking a top spot easily. it would maybe suck if they have to Play a slow Player in that 15 but i think i's fair. it's still easier to get a top rank like that than if you are participating over a longer time

1) Send a confirmation of registration to emails. Kills a large portion of alts right there. Murders them, viciously, gleefully. It'll be like Christmas, Hanuka and Ramadan all at the same time, huzzah!

2) What's this talk of stalling? Take it in stride! See it as a chance to kick back and have a beer. If you're in such a hurry to get to the top, you'll end up peeing all over yourself like an overly excited puppy. Take a break and hit the jon, maybe eat something, get laid and live a little.

3) Seeing a bunch of players who have already reached 1st, call the ladder a joke, is like watching the royals laugh at protesting mobs before they storm Versailles and start beheading and lynching everyone in a petticoat, but don't stop! You're all very entertaining and I'm still in the process of procuring a guillotine.

4) Those who take 1st with alts are cowards who use their "noobish" appearance to take advantage of the competition. Any player who makes the excuse of losing because "they didn't focus" is an equal coward. If you didn't focus enough you lost. Losing is losing, there is no damn excuse for it.

This is a strategy game, not a cowards frolic, grow some hair on your chest, men! *and for the women, I'm sorry, but I'm not sure how to tell a woman to "woman up"*

Seems unlikely that'd have any affect on the ladder.

Do people join the ladder with alts? Sure, but the time to create a new gmail account is far less than than to level up the new alt, or earn the money to make that alt a member. I really can't see anyone that would make an alt to play on the ladder being discouraged from doing so by email verification.

Good Kid - It adds another roadblock to the alt process, which can be discouraging. There are other methods as well. Imagine you go inactive for 30 days, so to reactivate your account you need to check an email and verify.

I'm throwing one of many ideas flying around out there that help to cut back on alt accounts. Obviously there are more, but essentially it reduces the general alt population of WarLight. The few malignant alts that persist can be beat using other methods.

Those that wish to have 2-3 accounts and use their real emails can do so, but at the price of investing more time and going through a longer process.

"i think that's not completely right. a top 50 Player can easily get a top 3 rank when he stalls a few games. i joined the ladder, beated 15 Players and took rank 3."

That seems very exaggerated.

Give Pulsey 4 losses in a row right now, one against all of his current opponents, he then drops to rank 25, still well within the top 50. No one who goes 15-0, even with stalling, should ever drop as low as rank 50.

Also: " but i had only 3-4 serious fight under my first 15 games." very much varies.

Here's a breakdown of the first 15 games I played on my last ladder attempt.

I'll use the categories sze created above:

1) Played 1 > 2000 players
2) Played 9 > 1700 players
3) Played 1 < 1550 players

10 of my first 15 opponents had 1700+ ratings (1800+ actually as well) only one 1 was 2,000+ though. There were 3 that were between 1550 and 1700, 1 that was under 1550, and then 1 I have yet to list. The thing that really, really can throw the matchups askew is when game 1 is against someone with a rating of 0.

Ladder is a bs

I absolutely do not agree with these!

Ladders are magnificent ideas!

Ladders are admirable possibilities for players to play against similar strength players continuously in an easy way! This is the point, I think.

Additionally, if a player plays enough games before expiration time (so not only the minimal 15 but much more without stalling) the ladder will show his circa skill level too. So based on his ladder performances, we can roughly put him into a skill category, but that's all.

The Ladder is (and never been) not suitable for ranking system!
The Ladder rather is more similar to the different tourney series, it is a challange like those.

And "simple" change the ELO counting method behind the ladders is not solved this, the ladders still not will be suitiable for ranking system! Remain "only" special (neverending) tourney series (with their exploitable leaks).

A legal ranking system is more complex than a "simple" challange.

And we can wait for Fizzer (asking him seriatim) to develop this legal ranking system but we shouldn't.
We shouldn't because of more reasons:
- Fizzer has limited time to develop Warlight (it seems)
- The very competitve (pro) Warlight community whos need this system is very small compare to the whole Warlight community, therefore I don't think so that Fizzer will develop this and not other features which more useable by the whole community.
- Maybe Fizzer himself is not enough competitive so he doesn't want to develop Warlight in that direction officially, I don't know :)

But I am 100% sure that this relative small pro community can be "develop" themselves a proper ranking system, just want it to be...

And when I wrote "develop", I didn't mean scripting (CLOT development or something like that), I mean simple google docs, forum topics, etc., not necessary more, I think!

However, what is needed that these pro community wants to develop this ranking system!

I had an attempt earlier (Warlight eSport Association (WeSA) - http://warlight.net/Forum/Thread?ThreadID=11364), which failed (I hope) only because my nickname is so light in warlight community and the lack of time to make (and present) it solely.

I still think, if the pro Warlight community decide that they make a ranking system, it will be an easy ride enough.

There are many-many possibilities!
We can eaasy adapt exist professional systems like the ELO ranking system in chess, or ATP ranking system in the tennis, etc.
And we already have many gorgeous tourney series, we only should merge them under a common ranking system!
And we really needn't difficult scripting, enough to use simple google docs and forum topics.

So write again, we only needed that the pro Warlight community want a proper ranking systems, and need some persons who has got the proper time to manage this system (making the adminsitrative tasks).

Unfortunatelly I am not that person (not enough time :( ), so I can only kindly ask somebodies from the pro community to make a proper ranking system, please, please, please :)
I can help them with my ideas (I had a lot :) ) in a braintsorming format for example.

And yes Piggy, again me, again my favorite topic :P

Yes it will :) Current problem is, that many people play 15 games once/3 months giving themselves a rating few hundred points higher than their real is. With TrueSkill without expiration or with using 15 chronologically sorted games that problem vanishes.

Or play only againts your alts?

The ladder is clearly a flawed system for comparing players. For example; with no new games being finished by either player player A can be ranked higher than player B, then a few hours later be ranked lower, then a few hours later ranked higher again. Neither of their skill level's have changed over those hours and yet the ladder tells us that it has. The ladder cannot be correctly assessing both players.

Anyone who considers a ladder rating or ranking correlative to skill is misguided. Comparing oneself to others by a common measuring stick is foolish. You can only use the ladder to compare your past performances with each other.
