Terra Incognita: 5/13/2012 15:22:22

Hey everyone, I'm working on a new fictional map called [Terra Incognita](http://WarLight.net/SinglePlayer.aspx?PreviewMap=12548).
When published, it will be the seventh-biggest fictional map, with a total of 252 territories, 36 regional bonuses and 12 national bonuses.

The idea aesthetically is to create an authentic-ish map of an obscure, formerly colonised continent, on which creole versions of Italian-Spanish, English, and Dutch are spoken.

As for the gameplay, each regional bonus has seven territories and each state has three regions, thus twenty-one territories.
Therefore, I'm also planning to give all the bonuses an equal value, but if anyone can give me a 100-page essay with scientific arguments on why they should be changed, I'll just skim the conclusion and change them.

*I'm currently doing some AI-powered tests of my own to see if any region is seriously overpowered.
It seems, not surprisingly, to help being on your own for as long as possible, but no specific region seems overpowered.*

I'd like to do some testing games, so anyone interested in a multi-day testing game is free to sign in here.
Also, anyone with an opinion is free to give them, but not all advice will be honoured.

Need to tweak it so bonus borders don't overlap.

Yeah, first I wanted to have definitive borders, because there are some maps, like Africa, where you can see gaps between borders that should overlap and vice versa due to changes.
I'll probably test version 1.0 and publish it and work on the borders in the meantime so that I can publish a smooth version 1.1.
Perhaps I'll then "tweak" the borders in my other maps as well while I'm at it...
How was I supposed to do this again?

Nice map looks a bit like a fantasy version of tasmania

[Here](http://warlight.net/Forum/Thread.aspx?ThreadID=3590) I stated the easiest way.

Aha, Ironheart, **I see what you** (think I) **did there!**
Well, it wasn't specifically based on anything, although I got the general idea of a Terra Incognita from the Belgian notion that Congo-Kinshasa (the big one), which was a colony only 62 years ago, is now *Terra Incognita*, alienated territory.

Also, I guess you could say I was inspired by Australia and America when I made Nyu Wails an' Yorgsher, meaning there's a New South Wales and a New York in my map.
Likewise, the Cocfedrathiò Brúsquu is a clear hint towards the Swiss Confederation and the Frystaet Ranjerlant is based on the Oranje Vrijstaat in South-Africa.
There are also several territories that are based on real territories, as you'd expect in colonies.

Additionally, as an Easter Egg, there's a Pokémon's name in the map. Can you find it?

Hadn't seen Moros' post when I hit *Reply*.

Oh, that's a bummer; I'd hoped there was a relatively easy way. Well, I'll see if and when I find the time, and otherwise it shouldn't be too big a disturbance to seriously hinder players.

It's easier if the borders are straight lines instead of curves.

And, there's also a book character hidden somewhere. (A cacography of course)

Richard, would you like to test as well?

I already have a bunch of tests going on. I'd like to help test, but one game max please.

You changed it quite a bit since last time I've seen it. At first glance it looks like an improvement; let's see what testing shows. :)

ps. Oeh, I never connected "Country" to "Contreien", funny what can be picked up on WL. :)

From our previous tests I learned I had to do something with the national bonus squares. I didn't want to do exactly the same as with The Netherlands, so I gave it a different look and added the compass and the mottoes.
Also, it was clear Prutenia was far too good a starter location, so I added Busotlia Mrigionà. I might also add a connection from Tierbol Uvèstal to the Remdi if it turns out Prutenia's still too good.

I didn't really make the link between *country* and *contrei* myself until I made this map and looked for words English and Dutch had in common.

By the way, Moros, did you read the last part of the game chat?

Well, I'm not sure, but I'll probably have to enlarge the map because some territories are a little small.
I hope that will make the borders fall apart a little, which might make the map uglier, but would solve the problem.
I'll send you an invite later today, Chaos.
