Might work in Virginia, but where I grew up, in Minnesota, the melted snow would then create a huge sheet of ice over the driveway and sidewalks. Unless you continued to the point that they were dry.
Some places do put heating elements through sidewalks, so the snow is melted immediately when it lands. And stays unfrozen and eventually evaporates. But it can be a problem with too much snow too quickly or if it gets VERY cold.

As long as nothing flammable is nearby it's a good strategy imo
