I don't own a smartphone. I own a tablet but haven't used it in years. I am typing this on a laptop which is my number 1 device for all things on the internet.

I really don't understand the appeal of smartphones.

1. They are slower than laptops and now they are becoming more expensive. You can't type on them nearly as fast without a keyboard. I can take notes in class via typing with a laptop but not with a smart phone.

2. All of the mobile websites are inferior.

.3. Not having a mouse is infuriating and not being able to right click is absolutely terrifying.

4. For a phone, I use this: https://www.amazon.com/LG-Cosmos-Verizon-Wireless-Prepaid/dp/B0106MV3GQ

i can text faster with this phone than I ever could on the tablet. Why would I want an apparatus that doesn't excel at typing or texting?

5. The screen is just big enough on my laptop that i can enjoy watching shows. Imagine trying to watch a show on the small screen of a smartphone with inferior sound quality especially if you compare computer headphones to smartphone earbuds.

6. Also, I get a kind of "gatekeeper" vibe from smartphones that you can only see the popular websites and apps. The most popular stuff is always being promoted. Controversal apps like gab.ia are regularly taken off the app store Even though I don't even use twitter or gab.ia, I don't think they should be taken off the app store and it is obvious that the gods of the Silicon Valley are censoring the stuff that you can see.

7. I am into a lot of niche websites that I need to bookmark. Do smartphones even allow you to bookmark websites?

And of course Warzone is pretty niche.

I think smartphones can be pretty useful for those people who need a "jack of all trades, master of none" portable device but not for me.

random fact: I didn't use the internet outside of school until the 8th grade (almost high school).

Smartphones can bookmark websites in the browser (possible in iOS Safari) and even make shortcuts to them out side of the browser (done that before using iOS 10).

If you’re complaining about loss if audio quality, use/buy a device that lacks a headphone jack. The latest iPhone that still has a headphone jack is the iPhone 6; unsure about Android.

Some smartphones such as mine are faster than Windows 7 laptops.

To minimise mobile websites being inferior, use the website’s app if it has one. Developers should really make their websites more responsive to ensure than their site looks good on small screens and large screens.

First PDA-s with internet, intranet, extranet and WIFI were available already in 2000s. Don´t know exact year, but around 1998-1999 they were introduced. If you do not know what PDA was, then look it up. It actually makes a lot of sense that PDA + old mobile-phone would lead one day to smart-phone. Its just we don´t exactly use smart-phones for the purpose of PDA, but the technology combination makes a lot of sense. A lot of businessmen used to have many devices back then.

Can someone really explain me why they need 1000 €/£/$ Smartphone?
Because, I just fookin can´t understand it? My 8-10 year old phone does most of the things I need: call, sms, check e-mail, social-media if needed and battery lasts a week, has 8MP camera if I really need to make some picture which I hardly do.

I have not met any sensible person who would regard tiny smart-phone screen viable for movie/tv-show watching experience? Nor use smartphone CPU and RAM for some really needed stuff? Why not use 12 inch laptop for this or 1.3 kg is really that heavy to carry around if one needs constantly some power? Neither I know anyone who would prefer to work or type on tiny screen, rather than have real physical keyboard.

What purpose does those smartphones serve nowadays? Thats why I don´t work in marketing, because I can´t understand peoples stoopid decisions.

On top of that I really find Phones Vs Computers totally irrelevant. Different machines/tools for different purpose. That one can use browsing on both does not make them comparable.

I agree 100% that they serve different purposes and that one does not replace the other.

I don't have a $1,000 phone by any means, but I do definitely prefer my 2 year old ~$400 phone to a 8-10 year old phone.

I am curious though, what 8 year old phone has a battery that lasts a week? The only way I can imagine that being possible is if the phone is that old, but the battery itself is newer and has been replaced.

I tend to take an even more extreme stance though on laptops. I don't think a 5-6 kg laptop is hard to carry around either, especially not if in a carrying case of some variety, and I'd much rather have a desktop replacement capable laptop than one that's significantly slower. The only true upside to me of low-weight, low-voltage laptops is their significantly improved battery life. The actual weight of the machines is a complete non-issue in my eyes.

Nokia, Symbian platform. Is not supported, developed since 2013, but not hard to tweak to make things working. And it has original battery.

I dont care either of laptop weight, my main is as well nearly 4kg, but when I have to carry laptop, 2-books, lunch and many folders of class-notes its more of a problem it wont fit into one bag :P. And if I only need text editor then 1.3 kg Thinkpad x200 is great.

I'm never getting a phone until I'm 20.

I prefer a computer because I can program on it, while on tablet/phone, the most productive thing I can do is watch Youtube.
