The standalone client has no ads, which is the way that non-members cover their share of the server cost. Ads allow the game to be free. Since the standalone client has no ads, it can't be free, and is such restricted to members.
If I could add ads to the standalone version, I would. But Adsense only supports iOS, Android, and websites, so I don't have the option.
