About a week into [this map](http://warlight.net/SinglePlayer.aspx?PreviewMap=8472) in my spare time. Thought I'd put it up just to see what interest level is out there and maybe get some pre-feedback. This would be officially my second map, though [the first](http://warlight.net/SinglePlayer.aspx?PreviewMap=8438) was my first experience with Inkscape and reflects that.

Concerning this map, as of 1/15 I've set all my center points, but am only about 10 or 15% finished with naming/bonuses/connections. Don't expect this map to go public any time soon, but in another week or so hopefully I'll be ready for testing and will need some help.

I haven't seen too many maps of this style on Warlight with a lot of the reason being that it's not a natural set-up for this style of game, but I'm going to give it a go anyway. All but a very few of the territories can handle two-digit army numbers and most larger numbers will just expand into empty space, but I'll be adjusting those that are a bit too small as I go along.

The biggest problem I'm finding already is deciding which territories should and shouldn't connect. Any map-makers or strategists that have any advice to offer would be welcome. My plan at the moment is just to do it all to my instincts and then adjust it after testing.

Some of the bonuses you can see now are a bit funky because I've grouped them in regards to the city blocks on my map. I might change them, I might not, we'll see how it goes.

That's about it for now. I welcome any and all constructive criticism, provided it's polite. :-) Let me know your thoughts!

I once thought my Benelux map would ever reach the second place of the list of biggest maps. I hoped Europe Big would stay below 1121, or that I could finish my map before LOKI. Now I've realized I've been terribly, terribly wrong!
Good luck on your map, I'm always in for testing games, and a few thing I'd like to say:

1. How do you name your territories?
2. Are all of your territories actual houses?
3. Is this a real city, and if yes, which one?
4. YOU ARE INSANE!
5. What are the grey walls on your map?
6. What is the large open space in the south?
7. Are all territories drawn? Or are even more going to fill the space below?
8. YOU ARE INSANE!

Whoa.

Whoa.

If I were you, I would avoid "cross-connections", such as between Martha - Virginia - July - Rebecca (where green, cyan and yellow bonuses meet). That's just my opinion, though.

@Moros 1. I couldn't even come up with 150 names for my first map, so I'm cheating on this one and using a list of girls' names. :-)
2+3. The original idea is a map of a town from a game. All of the territories would be houses, lined on streets.
4. Yeah, I didn't realize how comparatively large this map would be until somebody posted the graph of maps/territories. Oops.
5+6. It's intended to be an old city, so the grey walls are thickest and protect the oldest part of town. You can probably see another ring on the map, this is where a second, smaller, wall will go. The open space to the south is a river and a bay into the city. While the walls provide more choke-points, it's the same in my head as different continents on the world map.
7. The map thus far is about 99% true to the original, so I don't plan to add many more. I will, however, probably adjust some of them later on to make it more practical for gameplay.
8. You can't be fully insane until you don't know you're insane, right?

@dude with no name WTF, you have no name. But thanks.

@Matma Rex This is exactly the problem I am having even at this early stage. My plan going forward is to imagine that all of the territories expand until they touch each other, and only connect the ones that would, adjusted for special circumstances. The point you mentioned was one I already didn't like, so it'll get changed. The nagging fear in my head is that I'll have far too many linear situations, but we'll see. Thanks for that.

Glad to know people actually look. Thanks a ton!

Works for me, I'll use that as a rule of thumb. I'll fix that mess in the upper left corner later. Probably end up making new holes in the outer wall so that it won't take 18 turns to get through those two bonuses.

Idea: make the territory names in the center and in the outer ting girl names, and the ones in the middle ring boy names!

@myhandisonfire Were Lola and Lula twins? Seems you might know.

I'm suprised that I've made it this long without anyone telling me that this is the worst idea ever. Perhaps everyone is still in shock. I'm just hoping that I don't finish the whole thing only to have Fizzer tell me the territories are ALL too small.

is the original map baldur's gate?

this looks like a very promising map :)
you might want to add some more visual stuff so that the harbour is actually recognisable as a harbour.

Thank you, Sewerrat, for the encouragement. Indeed it is a map of Bloomridge, though at this point I've taken some liberties with it for the sake of making a better game.

I'm still debating what I'm going to do with the river/bay. I think I want to keep the black background for everything else, so I'm not sure yet how to depict the water without it looking like a big blue blob in the middle of the map.

Anybody have a suggestion?

I checked it out, I think you might want to add some indication of the streets, if you hadn't already planned to. Perhaps that is something you were going to add at a later stage, if so, sorry. Without representations of the streets, it just looks unappealing as a blob of houses.

Would something like [this](http://warlight.net/SinglePlayer.aspx?PreviewMap=8794) look better?

I think the last one looks better, now you can see that the 5 houses in the middle are actually an island! And what about my idea of making the middle ring houses with boys names?

I like the additional streets. Would those be throughout the whole map? Also, I obviously don't have time to check, but is EVERY territory name a different girl's name? Jaysus.

I think I'm going to stick with the plan of naming them all after girls. :-)

I hadn't put in a background image yet because I was worried that with my skill level it would look too stupid or that the connection lines would be harder to see. After giving it a try though, I see that even something simple adds a lot of context to it and the lines show up quite well. Thanks for the prodding guys. I'll add roads throughout the whole thing as I re-group and set the bonuses.

Perhaps I am a bit crazy for taking this on, but I'm getting excited for this map. I think it'll be quite interesting.

I have a few questions for anybody who is more familiar with Inkscape.

1. Is it possible to 'lock' an object so that it can't move? I repeatedly drag the background image around without intending to because the warlight editor is click-and-drag but Inkscape is scrolling only.

2. This is a very amateur question, but I'm curious. Will inkscape always recognize different colors as different objects? It would make sense to me if it did, but it would be nice to be able to map all the background objects together (i.e. without a million nodes) to lower the file size. Simplify rounds too many corners, and the union and combine functions inherently give the objects the same fill.

Also, the original link to my map preview no longer works, as I've switched to a duplicate after adding the background. The new [Bloomridge Map](http://warlight.net/SinglePlayer.aspx?PreviewMap=8794) is now the working link. Thanks in advance for any help!

P.S. Busy week this week, probably going to be next weekend before I'm close to testing, in case anybody was waiting.
