ok, so im in the early stages of designing my new map inspired by the 1944 battle in the Dutch town. this is going to be a concept map and not actually based on the real-world map, just inspired by the battle.

being a total novice with inkscape i´ve opened this thread to get some help throughout the development process. my first problem is this:

the map is divided in two by a river that cuts across the entire width of the map. the river itself is just a decorative device to create an impassable obstacle except on the bridges. the bridges are supposed to behave like standard territories. the trouble is having drawn the river first and filled it with blue colour now i cant seem to get a rectangular object on top of it (which is the bridge). the river still shows below. i tried to move the rectangle to the top and to put it in a layer on top of the river but nothing seems to work. i presume its a very basic and easy to solve problem but i cant figure it out. please give me any advice in as much detail as possible to sort this out. i want the rectangle to behave as a territory and cover the river beneath it.
thanks in advance for the help and i will keep you posted on the development, its gonna be a very interesting map i hope, with street to street and house to house fighting.

im thinking that maybe one solution might be the 'cut hole' i saw in the tips. but i cant find anywhere where it actually explains how to do this. help anyone?

My english is bad:).
You can select river-then type Page down on your keyboard, or you can select bridge and type Page up. Then the bridge will be shown over the river.
I drawing something similar:

There is 2 rivers and 5 bridges...

Bin, my recommendation is to use the 'division' tool.

Draw the bridge over the river with it overlapping the sides, select both groups and use the division tool. It should divide the river into three territories... the bridge and the upper and lower river.

I recommend playing around with the division tool as its a very useful one for carving up territories from already drawn bonuses groups. It makes the borders perfectly overlap so it is ideal for breaking down bonuses. (Bonus borders should abut, not overlap, so it is less useful for that.

here´s a preview of the work in progress. please let me know what you think.

this is the full sized map, with only the top half complete. there are are four paratroops drop-zones, one in each corner. these will be the major bonus areas along with the bridges. each house is a stand-alone bonus though very limited (1 or 2 reinforcements).

What will be the exact function of the paratroops drop-zones in the game? You can't force people only to use airlift in that certain place.

"there are are four paratroops drop-zones, one in each corner. these will be the major bonus areas along with the bridges."
obviously the paratroopers are simulated by the fact that you can have troops arriving via those locations.. not ideal, but the point should be understood..

yes exactly, the drop zones are simply bonus areas, but one with a dramatic advantage. in the battle of Arnhem the allied paratroops landed in fields with the mission to secure the bridges to allow the tanks and infantry to pass. what followed was a vicious battle where germans and allies fought at close quarters trying to block, occupy and reoccupy the strategic drop zones and bridges.
so in this map controlling a drop zone will give a huge reinforcement bonus and so does controlling the bridges. the rest of the city is collateral. this way im hoping to simulate the battle in a certain sense. players will have the option to occupy the drop zones or the bridges for big bonuses and fight a street to street and house to house battle in the city to block or reach these strategic points. my idea is to create a map that obliges players to think and play in a different way from the usual map.
so what does everyone think? would that work?

the work is advancing, but i really would like some opinions about the concept and the map, check the pics above and my comments about the concept and let me know what you think please.

Two more questions, will the south side exactly mirror the north side?
And where are you going to place the bonus links for the house blocks?

no moros the south will not be an exact mirror copy of the north. but it will follow exactly the same concept (same house block types and streets).
as for the bonus links, what do you refer to? the actual small box that indicates the bonus or the territories included?
if it is the square you are talkin about im thinking of placing it inside the house for example in the centre point of a four room house.
if you mean the territories, well each house block is an independent bonus, but with low value. does that answer your question?
