Racism? Why? What he said was not necessarily racist; it was a joke, but a joke in poor taste. Racial issues are very very sensitive over here. He should have known better than to use a derogatory term on television regardless of context and intent. I doubt he cares very much about offending people though.

Who cares? He's not the first or the last. It's just a word in the end. Sure it's offensive but what do you propose we do? Jail him for it?

Bill Maher is an offensive guy, he's offended nearly every group under the sun. None of this is shocking.

Well, they shouldn't. Even in rural Oklahoma, black people have called me a cracker before. Some people have called me a tomato as well (half Native American) and I literally do not give a damn. If everyone flips out when someone uses a simple word, they need to grow some balls and accept the real world. Yes, racism is wrong. But complaining about it doesn't get anyone anywhere. So if everyone could shut the hell up and get some thicker skin, that'd be nice.

People have reasons to be offended, but those reasons are not necessarily good reasons.

In this case Bill should have been wise enough to know that his remarks would offend many people and cause backlash. He apologized, he didn't expect the backlash he received but he should have, but he didn't.

I agree with this, but it extends beyond just race. Being extremely sensitive in general is a very, very bad thing and only hurts those who are offended. Change can happen, but this is not the answer.
