- 1v1 auto-games can help you with some fundamentals, especially territory picks.
- Join some small-map tournaments and/or P/R leagues.

(Both of those will also help you build up your level, so you get access to ladders and CLOTs).

- If you have a talkative opponent, ask questions in chat after the game.
- Most important - use the history button after the games are over, especially in the games you lost. Watch what other players did differently, and try to understand if/why that helped them beat you.

Play with friends. I started WarLight with a lot of friends and got good pretty quick, i am mainly good at team games though and not FFA.

DanWL- 1 year seems so long period for me. So i will skip it.

master of desaster- yeah-you can see that I am struggling to level up; but will join that once i get there.

I recommend M'Hunters and GG guide especially. Will give you good basics and clue what is WL strategy about.
