I really don't like the commander games. The interface is super unwieldy - you have to click on a bunch of stuff even to see what's going on with them, and I've lost games just by accidentally moving them when I didn't mean to. It's obviously possible to get them to do what you want, but it's not clear unless you click on several buttons what their impact will be. It's not clear when they'll die when attacked. I wish we would not keep having them in the ladder. I don't think they add much of anything to the game, and the interface makes what they could add just annoying.
Commander is worth 7 armies, all 7 armies need to be killed in one go to eliminate commander. If there are bonus armies, they get targeted first. If commander is lost, you get eliminated and turn neutral.
To my knowledge 7 army worth can be hard to figure on your own and not many players check wiki, but else is simple. Interface is most same as with regular armies, only difference is that you need to check additional checkbox to use commander to attack. In your orders list commander shows up in your attack information.
Once you learn the mechanics, commanders can have high strategic value. They can be used to take neutral territories for no cost. In combat they are fragile and during later stages of games left behind, but they certainly change the way games are played.
If you don't like commanders you do not have to participate in games or ladders containing them. I would advise you to play more games with commanders until you learn better how they work and once you're more comfortable with them, commanders shouldn't be much of problem.
I only play Warlight on PC, so cannot speak about mobile versions of game interface. It might not be suitable for commanders on those platforms.
