This thread seems overflowing with war-related movies, TV-series. Well it was expected in this site. But I find most of the above mentioned war-related films rubbish - nothing more that crappy action.

All quiet on Western Front has been always been a movie to watch: the 1930 and 1979 adaption and comparing and understanding why they are so different while both based on same book.

not at all. there are comedies, dramas, documentaries, historical themed movies, animes and even musicals mentioned.

however (movies): lucky number slevin, edge of tomorrow, departed, rock'n'rolla, layer cake,last samurai, man from earth, k-pax, 12 monkeys, fight club, city of god, apocalypse now, almost every bud spencer and terrence hill movie, seven, 13th warrior and The Shawshank Redemption

i'm currently watching Charlie Wilson's War for about the 50th time. I can recommend it.

For warmovies I really liked


- Die Brücke: a German antiwar film. It follows some young Germans guys at the end of the war. Due To nazipropaganda they decide to join the army and fight for glory. It is mainly about how their minds are twisted by the propaganda and how their thoughtproces goes.

-stalingrad (1993): make sure you watch the movie from 1993 and not 2013. Not surprisingly this movie is about the battle of Stalingrad. But I found that it, unlike many warfilms, doesn't glorify the soldiers and their actions. Instead it shows how horrible the situation in Stalingrad was.

Another movie I watched not too long ago was train to Busan. It is a Korean movie about an apocalypse similar to a zombie apocalypse. But unlike it's American counterparts it isn't all about action and killing zombies. It has a nice combination of story and action with realistic characters. It is one of the best apocalypse films I've seen.

-Hacksaw Ridge was incredible, along with other war movies like Band of Brothers, Unbroken, Saving Private Ryan(best one probably ever).

I just recently watched Allied, it was very interesting and had literally almost tearing up at end(and I never really cry during movies)

I also recently watched The Accountant with Ben Afflack- made no sense to me, I do not recommend it.

The Book Thief is a very good one as well, it is about a German family in WWII who take a Jew from Stuttgart and hide him in his basement and is told from the very interesting perspective of Death(The book was incredible, but long, but the movie was good as well).

I tend not to watch too much TV/movies, so my arsenal is limited, but I can suggest a few.

Movies:
Inception (my favorite movie ever)

The Road (not the best movie, but it's still good, and very underrated in my opinion)

The Revenant (I would suggest reading the book, which is also amazing)

Fistful of Dollars

TV shows:
Breaking Bad (the best show out there in my opinion. Not just an amazing story, but everyone involved is incredibly talented)

Better Call Saul (spinoff of Breaking Bad--somewhat slow-paced and not much action, but a great show nonetheless.)

Lost

Hell on Wheels

The Blacklist (the show I'm currently watching, if anyone spoils it I will end you)

Person of Interest (has its fair share of cheesy moments, but is still an amazing show)

Lie to Me (I lost interest in this particular show, but tons of other people like it)
