back in my days, 2020 could give you a meekly 6th or 7th, not 3rd...

The ladders do this over a long period of time. The ratings dip as more lower ranked players beat higher, but the mid range is much higher. Eventually, the spread will get larger again.

Look at my rank and rating and compare them to what the would have been through different times of playing. Mine is a good indicator of where it all has been.

For example, my ranking has stayed fairly consistent in the last year and a half, but my rating has fluctuated almost 150 points. Things just change over time, they will go back.

It seems to go back and forth, like Noob was getting at.

I've seen players with a highest rating of 1500-1600 who had a high rank of 20th as opposed to mine of 1900 and at 18th. I've also seen players with over 2000 who had 1st while some only had 2nd or 3rd.

If you see an opening go for it, but depressed ratings usually mean more competition ironically enough. It's been harder to get 10-15 wins in a row on the ladders since the level system was implemented.

yes i'm jealous, should have joined during these times... missed my chance, only chance of hitting top 10 for me is during initial punch through...

look at me, wl 2.0 explains most fo this, but it still is strange

begginign of november 2012: 25th with less than 1700
beggining of december 2013: 47th with close to 1850

There's a bunch of players with rating>2020 who don't participate in the ladder at the moment (Teddy, JSA, Synesthesia, Oliebol is close. Did I miss someone?) If they all decided to join, 2020 rating would actually give 6th-7th rank.
