I bumped into this list recently, and figured it would be a great idea to make a big world map using those cities and their countries of origin.

http://www.mongabay.com/cities_urban_01.htm

In total the list contains 3158 cities which would make the map as big as "Big US".

I would definitely be interested in teaming up with a few other Warlight players to start the project, because, unfortunately I have neither the time nor Inkscape talent to do it myself.

It would make a great map, except for 2 things.

Sometimes there are about a 100 Cities in one country. How are you going to connect those to the country, or do they spread into the country?

And two, it would be a pain to make it, since there is no map to work from, you'll have to search all those cities and their locations and copy that on one super-large world map.

I think I could join this project, but my Inkscape dislikes large SVGs, plus I see some problems:
- How many of these would the map include? (2000? 3000? all from the list?)
- Do you have any vision of the map? (cities drawn as circles scaled to their population? area? something else?)
- Which of these ranks to use? (city population? urban area population?)

BTW. My city/urban area is also on a list, 945th (as a city) and 129th (as an urban area) :P

Awesome, 25 Dutch cities in the list. Anyhow, this would be pretty messy, those 25 cities are all cramped together in a small country and most in an even smaller part called the Randstad. Conversely, there are areas which are as populous as a nuclear testing area.
Thumbs up to anyone who can make this happen.

Well initially, my general idea was to ask Fizzer if we could supersize his map. Then just split certain territories into countries etc...(e,g Spain in europe would be split and Portugal would be added as a separate country giving it's own bonus but would still give the "europe" bonus). Having spots sized by population is out of the question because it would simply be too difficult with countries like India and China. So we would have to stick with rectangle-like shapes that are kind of in the right place. The map doesn't need to be perfectly accurate to still be a good map :).

The general idea with having multiple people work on it would be to divide people into working on territories from the original map, that way, in the end it all fits together and can be resized.

We would have to divide the bonus a certain area gives by the amount of territories in it, and how by how easily accessible it is. So let's say we have cuba which is only connected to mexico, a country in south america and florida in the USA, and has three major cities (This is just an example, I didn't bother counting), it would give a max bonus of 2 or 1, but if you have all of central america, (which let's say has 25 major cities) You'd be granted an extra bonus of 15. While if you had all of Caucasus which let's say for arguments sake also has 25 major cities, you'd be granted a bonus of 25-30 since it's very difficult to defend.
